First Edition
Printed boards, 8vo, 54 pp, 25 plates. 132 lots. From the introductory note: "The pictures in this Sale comprise the first, or Italian, portion of the Collections in Dorchester House, Park Lane, and Westonbirt in Gloucestershire, the residences of the late Sir George Lindsay Holford, K.C.V.O. These Collections were formed mainly by his Father, Robert Holford, M.P., who lived for 84 years during the last Century, and are catalogued in three fully illustrated Volumes edited by Mr. Robert Benson - that on Westonbirt having been privately printed in 1924, and the two others on Dorchester House published this year by the Oxford University Press. Reference should be made to these Volumes. Like all the masterpieces of painting in the Holford Collections, those in the present section have been at one time or another lent on public view, namely, to the 1857 Exhibition of Art Treasures at Manchester, the Winter Exhibitions at the Royal Academy and New Gallery, and (after Mr. Holford's death) to the Burlington Fine Arts Club, of which both he and Sir George were members. In addition, most of them will be found commented on in the works of art-historians from Waagen to the present day. Upon all this material (including the Gazette des beaux Arts, Paris, January 1924) the auctioneers have drawn, recording in their Sale Catalogue facts and pedigrees as far back as ascertainable, and leaving questions of criticism and connoisseurship to European opinion." Boards browned, wear to spine which has a manuscript spine-title added, contents Good.

First Edition
Cloth-backed boards, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, 4to, 33 cm, 89 pp, iv pp, 2 plates 119 entries. A largely unillustrated trade version of the catalogue of the 12 Dorchester House manuscripts and 107 Westonbirt pictures: this catalogue has two plates only whereas the privately-printed limited edition has some 101 plates. The text of both versions is the same. From the preface: "This . Catalogue., owes its origin to the Winter Exhibition of 1921-2, held at the Burlington Fine Arts Club. It is a record. of twelve illuminated manuscripts from the ninth to the early sixteenth century out of the Holford Library at Dorchester House in London, several of them, each by itself, equal to a whole gallery; also of pictures from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century collected by Mr. Holford for his country house, Westonbirt, in Gloucestershire. It supplements the unillustrated Exhibition catalogue presented by Sir George Holford to his fellow members of the Burlington Club, and includes various trouvailles heretofore unhung and unknown. The bibliography of the manuscripts is taken from notes by M. Seymour de Ricci; and in compiling the short descriptions some use has been made of Mr. Sydney C. Cockerell's contributions to the catalogue of the Exhibition of Illuminated M held at the Club in 1908. It was amassed by Robert Holford (1808-1892) and divided between his seat, Westonbirt in Gloucestershire, and his London home, Dorchester House in Park Lane. The Westonbirt material is catalogued in this volume; the Dorchester House collection was subaequently he subject of a 2-volume catalogue published in 1927. 97pp, [3]. With terminal blank leaf. Stitched within original pink printed paper wrappers. Worn, with loss and staining to wrappers, some marking to text, large portion of terminal blank torn away. Some occasional pencilled annotations/prices added. The first 109 lots of this 13 day sale of the contents of Holford House, which was - when designed by Decimus Brutus and built in 1832 for the wealthy wine importer James Holford - the largest house in Regent's Park, rather fittingly dispersed the deceased former owner's private cellar of Sherry, Hock, Champagne, Port, Madeira, Cognac, Rum and Whiskey. The entire sale, as this catalogue attests, totalled over 2000 lots, and included choice examples of contemporary furniture, furnishings, antiques, art, and a library. The latter was disposed of in 68 lots (several of which including multiply volumes) on the seventh day of the sale, and featured largely nineteenth-century works. Amongst novelists featured were Scott, Edgeworth, Fieldin and Sterne, whilst political economists and historians included Smith and Gibbon. Choice luxury works listed in folio format included Boydell's large paper Shakespeare in nine volumes (London, 1802) with a further plate volume, and the ever-popular Foreign Field Sports with '110 coloured illustrations' (London 1813). COPAC locates no copies in British institutions, and OCLC adds just the single, extra-illustrated example at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Size: Quarto.
