Item Description: Grand Rapids MI. 2011. Zondervan Publishing facsimile reprint of the 1611 original, 2011. thick brown & gold decorative hardbound 8vo. 8º (octavo). no dustwrapper (as issued). fine cond. binding square & tight. covers clean. edges clean. contents free of markings. nice clean copy. no library markings or store stamps, no stickers or bookplates, no names, no inking , no underlining, no remainder markings etc ~. first printing ( # 1 in # line) of this special edition. illustrated title pg. 1505p. 6,637 old testament margin notes. 765 new testament margin notes. 34 page genealogical table (starts with adam & eve, ends with christ). b&w map of the land of canaan with inset. ancient history. biblical studies. king james bible. old testament. new testament. ~ Four hundred years ago, an estimated twenty different print shops in London worked on the production of the first printing of the King James Version of the Bible. The task facing these master printers in 1611 was enormous. Unlike the high~speed computerized typesetting of today, all type had to be set by hand, letter by letter and piece by piece. With care they set each letter, number and punctuation mark into place. The painstakingly slow process of assembling 1,505 pages of type took the better part of a year. When finished, the printers had assembled and produced what has become the most loved and used English translation of the Scriptures. For the first time since the original King James Version rolled off the presses, you can see and experience an exact, page by page, digitally remastered replica of the original 1611 printing in an economically priced edition. This replication contains the lavishly illustrated genealogy of key Biblical figures~from Adam and Eve to Jesus. You will enjoy the beauty of the decorative initials and the complete preface entitled, "From the Translators to the Readers" found in the original. And, while the 1611 King James Version does not contain explanatory or doctrinal comments, it does include annotations to help explain a number of Hebrew and Greek words. There are 6,637 such marginal notes in the Old Testament and an additional 765 notes found in the New Testament. While printing the 1611 King James Version was clearly a labor of love, it did possess a number of typographical errors, primarily with regard to spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and the use of italics. With few exceptions the typos did not materially affect the meaning of the text. Rather than correct those minor imperfections, this replica preserves and presents the workmanship of the original~including the use of the elegant classic typeface. There are only two differences between this special 400th Anniversary Edition and the first copy, namely: we have presented it without the deuterocanonical books and have reduced it from a massive 12" x 16" pulpit~sized folio to this manageable keepsake. The Editors at Zondervan are indebted to The Bible Museum in Goodyear, Arizona (visit them at Greatsite. com) for supplying the digital files necessary to make this the most authentic, visually identical replica of the 1611 King James Bible available in the general market. We invite you to embrace the elegance, majestic style and rich cadence of the first printing of the KJV. Let these digitally remastered pages transport you back in time as you read and experience the greatest story ever told. Bookseller Inventory # 8021701

Item Description: London The Nonesuch Press 1963, 1963. 2 volumes. First edition, limited, of the octavo printing designed by Francis Meynell. Profusely illustrated with reproductions of the fine 16th century woodcuts of Bernard Salomon. Tall 8vo, original fine green linen decorated in gilt on covers and spines. xxvii, 700; iv, 806. A very pleasing set, with just the lightest touch of wear to the tips and edges. A very appealing version of the Bible--the traditional King James text finely printed in single column, and with the addition of Salomon's woodcuts, which lend a historical feel to the volumes. It was designed by Sir Francis Meynell to be an exceptional combination of handiness, legibility and beauty. The set is printed on a fine India paper made especially for this edition to Sir Meynell’s specifications and bound in a fine green linen also produced especially for Meynell. The King James or Authorised Version of the Bible is an English translation of the Christian Bible first published in 1611. The New Testament was translated from the Textus Receptus (Received Text) edition of the Greek texts, so called because most extant texts of the time were in agreement with it. The Old Testament was translated from the Masoretic Hebrew text. (Modern English Bibles such as the New American Standard Bible and the English Standard Version decline to use the Textus Receptus, opting instead for what many modern scholars feel are more reliable critical editions.) The King James Version has had a profound effect on English literature. The works of famous authors such as John Milton, Herman Melville, John Dryden, and William Wordsworth are deeply inspired by it. Although it is often referred to as the King James Version, particularly in the United States, King James was not personally involved in the translation, though his authorisation was legally necessary for the translation to begin, and he set out guidelines for the translation process, such as prohibiting footnotes and ensuring the position of the Church of England was recognised on various points. It is more commonly known as the "Authorized Version" in the United Kingdom. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover. Bookseller Inventory # 002454
