Roy. 4to., First Edition thus, with 2 engraved frontispieces (original tissue guards present), 24 fine engraved plates (all original tissue guards present), 5 engraved maps coloured in outline and an engraved plan, 4pp Family Register engraved in red and black, some light and inoffensive age-staining (mainly marginal); handsomely bound in original full pebble-grain pigskin, upper board with debossed decorative multiple frame border enclosing stylised floral lozenge, back with five raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled and ruled in blind, all edges gilt, boards set in brass frame with ornate clasp, very neatly rebacked, a remarkably bright, clean and most attractive copy. The Family Register, placed between the Testaments as usual, is completed in manuscript for the Wilson family; John and Maria Wilson were married at Trinity Church, Lambeth, Surrey in 1847. The book is overall in VERY GOOD condition, having been professionally restored. Sporadic light foxing throughout; pages yellowing with age. Some few pages dog- eared on the corners but less than 20mm across and not affecting any text; many of the tissue guards and the occasional text page have finger marks. There are a few (less than 10) closed tears in the page margins. Some fading and scratching on gilt edges. This appears to be the second, much augmented edition of the book originally printed in 1858. 1276pp. Original dark brown, blind-stamped leather. Bevelled - edged boards. Gold hand-printed lettering on spine and somewhat faded gold illustration and decorative borders on front. Spine is new faux leather with 5 raised bands. All gilt edges. New endpapers. Illustrated half- title in colour. Double columns with lengthy parallel passages, which suggest the appropriate meaning of the text ("judicious observations" ) and give the chapter and verse, for other references on the topic by T Scott. The footnotes are" condensed comments" by Matthew Henry consisting of "devotional matter'' . for. "Religious improvement". These additions to the Bible "constitute the principal value of this edition". No Lists : illustrated with (24) tinted lithographs of Biblical incidents, after drawings by ( David Roberts - as for the 1st Edition), all with tissue guards in remarkably good condition.; (4 ) black and white , engraved landscapes, only one with a tissue; 8 pages each with 2 coloured maps; no tissues; one tissue guard with no accompanying illustration , suggesting that one engraving is MISSING. Between the O T and the N T is a 4 page blank Family Register. The 1276pp includes 288pp of the O T numbered separately. It also includes 1. Scripture Chronology. 2. Six-page section : Table of Proper Names in the Old and New Testaments with the meaning of the words in the original languages. 3. Offices and Sects. 4. Great Prophecies. 5. 28 pages Summary of Biblical Antiquities in rear (this section illustrated with some b/w in-text illustrations). 6. PLUS 48 pp Biblical Cyclopaedia by John Eadie. 7. Folio (13 3/4" x 10 1/2"). 1276pp. Original blind-stamped leather with gold borders on front and rear cover, gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. All gilt edges. Marbled endpapers. Blue ribbon marker. Frontispiece. Illustrated title-page. Variant title-page, stating "London: James Sangster & Co., 36 Paternoster Row." This 1858 edition of the Family Bible was the first to include lengthy parallel passages, which suggest the appropriate meaning of the text. In general, the marginal references simply used to indicate the chapter and verse, here these important notes, "comparing spiritual things with spiritual," are quoted at length. The condensed comments by Matthew Henry and Thomas Scott constitute the principal value of this edition. Illustrated with 31 tinted lithographed landscapes after drawings by David Roberts, 5 maps, 1 plan of ancient Jerusalem and its environs, as well as a family index. Index partly filled-in with handwritten list of names of the "George King" family with birth dates. Lithographed plates protected by tissue guards. Six-page section Alphabetical order of the proper names in the Old and New Testaments with the meaning of the words in the original languages and 28 pages Summary of Biblical Antiquities in rear (that section illustrated with some b/w in-text illustrations). Age wear, scuffing and some staining on binding. Tail of spine bumped and worn, wear to corners and parts of edges. Some fading and scratching on gilt edges. Hinges starting. Name and address of previous owner on blank leaf in front. 3" uneven tear on upper margin of Jericho plate, not affecting image. Sporadic foxing throughout, some pages creased. 5" closed tear on last five leaves (three text and two blank leaves). Binding in good, interior (besides torn leaves) in good+ condition.
