About this Item: Samuel T. Armstrong and Crocker and Brewster, 1830. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Four oversized hardcover volumes. Brown leather over boards with gold lettering on red and black title plates on spine with decorative gold striping. Title page dated 1830. Volumes I, II, III, and IV are 756, 654, 654, and 904 pages, respectively and comprise of Gen-Judg., Ruth-Esther, Job-Sol. S., and Isaiah-Malachi. In good condition. Covers are rubbed and scuffed, though marbling on surface is still visible and handsome. Some chips to the leather at corners, heads and feet of spines, and along the spine of Vols. I, II, and IV. Chips also along rear hinge of Vol. II. Cracking of leather along spines. Leather is peeling back from spine at head of Vol I, and a small piece of its title plate is missing- though the lettering is still in place. Lettering on all volumes is bright. Bindings remain strong and square. The name James Bridge is written on the front free endpapers of all four volumes. Something else is written in the lower corner of Vol. IV's front free endpaper as well. Pages remain relatively bright, though there is heavy foxing throughout as well as the occasional dark spot from age. A few small tears and dog-ear folds from bumps to corners, though most pages remain free of tears or creases. Though aged, this set is overall sturdy and handsome. Frontispiece to Volume I features half-tone portrait of Rev'd Thomas Scott, protected by tissue guard. Several Family Record Pages at the beginning of Vol. I have handwritten the marriage, births, and deaths of James Bridge's family. This is an oversized (and overweight) set. Extra shipping charges may be required for international or priority delivery. Seller Inventory # 17-1191

About this Item: Printed & Sold by Hugh Gaine, New York, 1792. An early American Bible with a fascinating creation story. According to Margaret Hills, "The ruby type of this edition is said to have been set up in Scotland and imported [by Hugh Gaine] in page form, ready for printing. The type was apparently kept standing." It is said that Isaiah Thomas bought five hundred copies of this Bible in sheets, due to the delay in the completion of his school edition of the Bible. Provenance: Timothy Hall's family bible ca. 1800). Later in the Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Evidence of Readership (or Something else ? Engagement?): Former owners and their children have filled the blank endpapers with names and scribbles in pencil and ink; the New Testament title-page verso and an endpaper record important family dates, such as Timothy Hall's marriage to Elizabeth Morgan and Harry Harmon Hall's birth in 1801, while endpapers and blank sections of the Bible have provided scribble space and handwriting practice for Harry and a presumably different Timothy. => All of this endearing, none of it off-putting. 12mo (17 cm; 6.75"). [408] pp. ESTC W4514; Evans 24098; Hills, English Bible in America, 40; Sabin 5175; O'Callaghan 45?6. 18th-century calf, spine with raised bands; well-rubbed with leather crackled and loss at spine extremities, especially to top compartment. Ex-library as above, light pencilling on t.-p., pencilled call number and accession number on title-page verso; family penmanship and genealogical contributions as noted. One torn corner, a short tear on N.T. title-page, a handful of leaves trimmed closely with loss of a letter per line; light to moderate age-toning with the occasional spot. => An interesting Bible bibliographically, and a "family" Bible in every sense. About this Item: Thomas Baskett, Oxford University. Leather. Condition: Fair. Leather; English language; No jacket; 4to - over 9.75" - 12" tall; a fair reading copy; published at Oxford by Thomas Baskett, printer to Oxford University and to the King (George II): comprises The Book of Common Prayer (Oxford, 1754); the Old and New Testaments (Oxford, 1755) separated by the Apocrypha, An Index to the Holy Bible, or an account of the most remarkable passages; Tables of Scripture-Measures, Weights and Coins, by Right Reverend Richard, Lord Bishop of Peterborough; A Brief Concordance by John Downame (printed for R Ware, at the Bible and Sun on Ludgate-hill, 1752); this combination not mentioned in Darlow & Moule (1903 edition); title page (and next page) of Book of Common Prayer is unattached and tatty, page containing Isaiah XIIâ₠“XV is separated and somewhat tatty but present; general condition of pages and binding is good considering age, there are some foxing and other marks but these are usually minor and many pages have no markings at all; Bibles in this period often sold unbound and the binding is not that of a professional bookseller - at least the outer binding is not, using thick leather, stitched at joins and held in place with chords, a remarkable piece of C18th artisan craftsmanship; there are 5 raised bands on spine, underneath the leather, which may indicate a previous professional binding, there is a tear to the leather at the top of the spine which can be easily restitched though it does allow you to see the binder's craft beneath; leather is scuffed and worn but this adds to the overall impression of a much-used and much-treasured volume; rear endpaper used by a Henry Flesher in 1763 to record family births from 1749-57, including Ann Flesher, who Married into the Marriner woollen mill dynasty in Keighley and who was the grandmother of William Lister-Marriner, from whose descendant this book came into the seller's hands, there is a lot of biographical information available about this family; more detailed photographs of the book and its contents available on request. About this Item: William W. Woodward, 1804. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Four volumes of a five volume set bound in full original calf with a red title block reading "Scott's Commentary" on spine. Boards rubbed and starting to crack but all still holding. I believe this to be the First American edition of Scott's Bible as title page of V1 states " The First American From The Second London Edition, Improved And Enlarged". Contains; V1 1804, Genesis to Samuel, V2 1805, Kings to Solomon's Song, V3 1806 Isaiah to Malachi, V5 1809 Romans to Revelations. The title page of volume 5 reads "The New Testament of our Lord And Saviour Jesus Christ: Translated from the Original Greek, with original notes and practical observations." Volume 5 also contains the list of subscribers with Thomas Jefferson's name and three pages for family records. I have only found one mark inside, a pencil signature on Vol.1 end paper, otherwise there is no writing anywhere and the pages are very clean. The paper used to print this set was of higher quality than redly available at the time which was part of the reason for the original $20.00 price. The printing was started when 500 subscribers had committed to the purchase and has been printed many times since. This printing of "Scott's Family Bible" is rare in Libraries and at the time of this listing not available for sale. Seller Inventory # 000318

About this Item: Hugh Gaine, New York, 1792. Hardcover. Condition: Good+. First Edition Thus. 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 816 pages; New York, Printed and sold by Hugh Gaine, at his book-store and printing-office, at the Bible, in Hanover-Square: 1792. Contemporary calf boards with sympathetic professional rebacking and replaced morocco label at spine. In 12's, printed in double columns. The contents have been carefully inspected with all pages believed present, including original endsheets. Extensive family records in a close hand relating to the families of Daniel Hodgkins, his daughter Betsy Hodgkins and of Sylvanus Sparks, to whom she was wed in 1812. Family history is listed on the blank leaf between the Testaments and on the verso of the title page and blank area of the facing recto. Condition faults are thus: the first 20 or so leaves are rubbed and a little nicked at the front edge, with some shallow chips at the corners. 6 or 7 of those leaves have short partial closed tears starting from the gutter, which have been closed with archival paper repairs. Leaf A9 had apparently detached and is missing a small triangular chip at the top gutter edge with some loss of text. The front edge of the same leaf is missing all of the margin and some minimal areas of text. Small worm hole in the lower margin of signatures M-O, generally not affecting text, but here and there reaching into the terminal line or two. Similar margin worming top front corner same signatures and likewise at top front corner of signature Z. Expected light toning to pages as expected. A tallow type margin stain to the margins of the first several leaves. Front endpage and terminal printed leaf have short archival paper reinforcements to the top edges. According to Hills "the type for this edition is said to have been set up in Scotland and imported in page form, ready for printing. The type was apparently kept standing. In 1803, the forms were sold to Matthew Carey of Philadelphia. Because of the delay on his own school edition, [Isaiah] Thomas is said to have purchased 500 copies of this Bible in sheets in 1792." It also seems likely that the forms were used by William Young of Philadelphia for his 1794 Bible. A rather decent example, with noteworthy provenance, and with an attractive sympathetic rebacking. Hills 40. Seller Inventory # 13224
