Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2017. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from The Holy Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments; Translated Literally From the Original Tongues Over twenty years ago, when I had four sisters, a friend met with us weekly, to search the Scriptures, we being desirous to learn the exact meaning of every Greek and Hebrew word, from. Which King J ames s forty-seven translators had taken their version of the Bible. We saw by the margin that the text had not been given literally, and it was the. Literal meaning we were seeking. I had studied Latin and Greek at school, and began by translating the Greek New Testament, and then the Septuagint, from which our Saviour quoted one or two texts which are not in the Hebrew Bible, and there is now said to be no Hebrew Bible extant so old as the Septuagint. We all. Had a strong desire to learn the signification of the proper names, and I wrote to a learned friend about it, and he advised me to study Hebrew, saying, it.was a simple language, and easily learned, there being but one book in the world, of pure Hebrew, which was the He added that, then I could see with my own eyes, and not look through the glasses of my neighbors I soon gave my attention to the Hebrew, and Studied it thoroughly, and wrote it out word for word, giving no ideas of my own, but endeavoring to put the same English word for the same Hebrew or Greek word, everywhere, while King J ames s translators have wholly differed from this rule; but it appeared to us to give a much clearer under standing of the text. It had never at that time. Entered my mind that I should ever publish the work, but I was so much interested and entertained to see the connection from Genesis to Revelation, that I continued my labors and wrote out the Bible five times, twice from the Greek, twice from the Hebrew, and once from the Latin - the Vulgate. These three languages were written over the head of our Saviour. They are now dead languages and cannot be altered. The whole construction is so complete, that it does seem to be the work of inspiration, and the only communication from God to man, for all time. The work is given in types, in figures, in parables, and in dark sayings, a knowledge of which is gained, as all other knowledge is gained, . By thedcsire of the heart to learn it. It may be thought by the public in general, that Ihave great confidence in myself, in not conferring with the learned in so great a work, but as there is but one book in the Hebrew tongue, and I have defined it word for word, I do not see how anybody can know more about it than I do. It being a dead language no improvements can be made upon it. As for the Latin and Greek, I have no doubt many have searched deeper into the standard Works than I have, but I think no one has given more time and attention to the literal meaning of the Bible text in these languages. Item Description: Hartford, Connecticut: American Publishing Company, 1876., 1876. 4to, original brown cloth, gilt title at spine and upper cover, speckled edges. Title leaf, 892 (Old Test.), [1]-276 (New Test.) pp. The first edition of the first translation of the entire Bible by a woman. Julia Evelina Smith (1792-1886), a suffragist and abolitionist from Glastonbury, Connecticut, translated the Bible in the 1850's in an overt attempt to aid the cause of woman's rights by demonstrating what a woman might accomplish. However, she did not publish her work for another twenty years. In her preface, Smith notes: "It may seem presumptuous for an ordinary woman with no particular advantages of education to translate and publish alone, the most wonderful book that has ever appeared in the world, and thought to be the most difficult to translate. I had studied Latin and Greek at school, and began by translating the Greek New Testament, and then the Septuagint. I soon gave my attention to the Hebrew, and studied it thoroughly, and wrote it out word for word, giving no ideas of my own, but endeavoring to put the same English word for the same Hebrew or Greek word, everywhere. It took me about seven years to accomplish the five translations, at least." In her radical and controversial work, The Woman's Bible, Elizabeth Cady Stanton noted of Smith's translation that copies "will be a rarity in the next century and will be much sought after by bibliomaniacs, to say of nothing of scholars who will want it for its real value." An inscription appears on the flyleaf reading 'Presented by the translator to Alice M. Stokes, Southbury, Conn.' Another inscription reads 'Charles W. Burpee, Hartford.' (Burpee was a Yale graduate (1883) and edited several Connecticut newspapers). An inscription appears on the title-page as well, reading 'By Julia E. Smith, Glastonbury, Conn.'REFERENCES: Simms, The Bible in America, pp. 149-150; Stanton, Elizabeth Cady. The Woman's Bible, p. 151. Large octavo, full brown sheepskin, embossed on spine and both covers, spine stamped in gilt: "HOLY BIBLE / Translated by Julia E. Smith," pp. 892; 276.Julia E. Smith, in her preface, begins: "It may seem presumptuous for an ordinary woman with no particular advantages of education to translate and publish alone, the most wonderful book that has ever appeared in the world, and thought to be the most difficult to translate. It took me about seven years to accomplish the five translations, at least. I think never has the sense of the Original Tongue been altered." Julia Evelina Smith (1792-1886) and her sister Abby Hadassah Smith (1797-1878) were noted Connecticut suffragists, abolitionists, and tax protesters. They were two of five spinster sisters born to Zephaniah Hollister Smith. "Julia Smith. hoping to aid the suffrage cause by demonstrating that a mere woman had accomplished . she published at her own expense a translation of the Bible she had completed." [see 'Notable American Women,' III, p. 302-304; cf. Stanton, 'The Woman's Bible,' p. 151]. Inscribed by translator Julia E. Smith to the "Woman Suffrage Club of South Newbury, Ohio," on the front flyleaf: "To the Woman Suffrage Club of South Newbury Ohio, Presented by Julia E. Smith of Glastonbury, Connecticut." A later ink inscription is present on front flyleaf, stating: "Mrs. Allen presented this Bible to Mrs. L. A. Redfield the evening before the family left South Newbury.". Also present is an autograph letter from Irma Redfield McIntyre (dated 1943), stating, in part: "The handwriting under the presentation inscription, is that of my sister, Winifred Redfield Johnson. The book was evidently given to my mother, Mrs. L. A. Redfield, by Mrs. D. M. Allen, who was the leader of the suffrage movement at South Newbury. [signed] Irma Redfield McIntyre" (tipped onto verso of front flyleaf). A scarce book in the marketplace, reportedly published in an edition of only 1000 copies. Inscribed by Julia E. Smith. Only two copies have appeared at auction since 1975 (per ABPC). Front cover detached, but present, spine is worn and quite chipped, rear hinge started, first few leaves detached (but present), text otherwise generally fresh and clean (complete and sound). Elizabeth Cady Stanton, in 'The Woman's Bible,' notes: "They will be a rarity in the next century and will be much sought after by bibliomaniacs, to say of nothing of scholars who will want it for its real value.". First edition thus; first complete translation of the Bible into English by a woman; variant issue binding, bound in full sheepskin [also issued in cloth]. Bookseller Inventory # 67149
