Item Description: Y London Printing and Publishing Company, Limited, 1850. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Extremely rare and beautiful Welsh Bible from around 1850 with full leather binding and brass edging strips and clasps (all present). This translation has been completed under the direction of Peter Williams (1723-1796); the nearest comparison I have been able to find is an 1846 Williams translation published by H. Fisher & Son, a copy of which is in the National Library of Wales. There is no publication date for this edition but I estimate around 1850. Fully bound in black leather with extensive gilt decoration and blind stamping (a couple of tiny marks but not such as to detract); five raised bands to spine with gilt panels between; brass edging strips to top, bottom & outer edge of both boards; two decorated brass hinges, both working. Brass edging to rear board is slightly bent next to clasp hinges & bottom outer corner but seems still to be firmly attached (clasps properly aligned). Text block gilded to all three visible edges. Binding in very good condition indeed; endpapers reinforced with black cloth gutter strips, very slightly cracked at one or two points (may be original, as the leather shows little sign of wear externally). Plain brown endpapers; dedication on front flyleaf: 'To Kate With best wishes from Uncle Dan, Sheffield' (many south Welsh mining families migrated to Yorkshire in the Victorian era, as Welsh mines closed and new ones were opening or being expanded in South Yorkshire). Title page on heavy cartridge paper with blue & red lettering (light foxing only); preface & introduction by Peter Williams, followed by reference tables & contents listings; Bible text pp.1036, followed by psalms etc. to rear. Text printed in two columns within double line edging, with notes and referencing in panels to page bottom. Generously provisioned with full page colour engravings - these may also have been used in other editions of the Holy Bible, as the captions are in English. Unused family portrait gallery & family register within decorative panels etc. immediately prior to the New Testament. Condition inside is excellent: light spotting to one endpapers & small signs of handling; one or two illustrations have light foxing due to their being printed on slightly more absorbent paper; written text generally very lean indeed; some tiny corner folds to top outer page edges which have been flattened out well (a tiny point just for the sake of completion). A beautiful and scarce item, possibly museum quality. Extremely large & heavy item, so the normal 8vo flat rate will not apply (courier may be more reliable/safer and less expensive depending upon destination); for overseas shipping please contact us first. Bound in full mottled calf, expertly rebacked with original gilt ruled spine laid on, preserving gilt lettered morocco label, original endpapers. New leather visible at top and bottom of spine and hinges, neat small repairs to corners, couple of very small scrapes to covers, 2 small dark stains to first engraved title, 1 to margin, 1 to lower inner corner affecting edge of 1 image, occasional small stains to text and margins, not affecting legibility, mostly very clean, small closed tear to lower edge of 4th leaf of prelims, neatly repaired, on verso of 4th leaf the references to the Apocrypha and its books have been crossed through in old ink (Apocrypha not present ), very small chip to edge of 2 margins 1 with slight loss to sidenote, another to 1 lower corner with slight loss to sidenote, some upper margins trimmed, some fore-edges also, very close to sidenotes, all still legible, a little pale ink marking on 2 illustrations, a few pages very lightly age-browned, occasional very pale stain to lower half of pages, old scribble to blank margin of divisional title page, chapters of N. T. numbered in pale ink, inscription on blank opposite first page of Table and on blank verso of title to Metrical Psalms, a note at the end of the Table, note in margin of final page (Table) all in old ink, last page has paper repair to tear in lower margin, pale age-browning throughout and occasional pale brown spots and a few very pale stains. Binding tight and firm. A very good complete copy. Geneva version with Tomson's N. T. , but with Francis Junius' Revelation. There are many editions with the date 1599. Ours is probably the earliest as it "abounds more than any others in gross errors: Song of Solomon v. 3, defile for put; Isaiah xxx. 32, beards for harps; xxxvi. 12, thing for dung". There is no Apocrypha in this copy, "the section containing the Apocrypha, though included in the list of books, was apparently omitted from all except a few copies. These Bibles were printed probably for English use in the Low Countries . Perhaps printed at Amsterdam about 1599". Darlow and Moule Volume I, page 115, No. 188; Herbert, page 116, No. 248; Carl Pforzheimer Library, English Literature 1475-1700, Volume 1, page 69, No. 60. our copy collates the sames as Pforzheimer. 4;A-Z8;&6; Aa-Qq8; lacks blank; Aaa-Qqq8;Rrr4.
