Item Description: Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, 1952, 1952. ORWELL, George. Homage to Catalonia. New York : Harcourt, Brace and Company, (1952). First US Printing. Pp. (4),[v]-xxiii,(3),[3]-232. 8vo, yellow calico cloth. Fenwick, George Orwell: A Bibliography, A.6c. "Here is a first-hand account of the Spanish Civil War by a man who fought and was wounded init. it. Fortunately for us, he also happened to be a man who had a bettergrasp of contemporary history than perhaps any other man of our time. In Homage to Catalonia George Orwell, with his uncompromising honesty, spells out for the first time the manner in which the Communists, directed from Moscow, betrayed the Loyalist forces. It is a tribute to Orwell that when the book first appeared in Eneland in 1938, the Communists lnstantly recognizedhim as an eloquent and dangerous foe. It was during this period in Spain that Orwell learned for himelf — he had come to distrust the journalism of the era - the function of totalitarianism in prectice, whether of the right or the left. In this sense, Homage to Catalonia is a forerunner to his greatnovel, Nineteen Eighty-Four." - from the dj. Name and July 28, 1952 acquistion note, penned on inside front cover, else very good in nicked unclipped; with the original $3.50 price) dustjacket. 300.00. Bookseller Inventory # 112278

Item Description: AB Független kiadó, Budapest, 1986. Book Condition: In fine condition. First Hungarian edition. Samizdat. Mimeograph print. In publisher's illustrated wrappers. 127, (3) p. Samizdat edition of the Orwell's memoir of the Spanish Civil War. Orwell's works, due to his criticism toward the U.S.S.R. were banned in the Communist block. In Communist régimes the publication of many material were illegal and therefor underground publishings and secret ways of spreading of "samizdat" books developed. Samizdat editions, mostly political pamphlets, appeared in Hungary in the 1970s in the poor form of carbon copies of typescripts. Later in the 80s the so-called Democratic Opposition in Hungary established semi-underground publishings, like "AB Független" to publish not merely political literature but also literature that was banned by the Commuist politics, among others the works of George Orwell. Scarce, we could not trace any copies in institutional holdings in the US. In publisher's illustrated wrappers First Hungarian edition. Samizdat. Mimeograph print. Bookseller Inventory # 508

About near fine, with some light rubbing to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, some faint soiling to the otherwise bright boards, minor offsetting to the free endpapers, otherwise fresh interior. Overall, a very clean and pleasing copy. Homage to Catalonia is Orwell's account of the Spanish Civil War that he wrote shortly after he escaping from Spain to France in 1937. After heading to Spain as a journalist in 1936, Orwell joined the Republicans in their fight against Franco's Nationalists; unlike other leftist foreign intellectuals, however, he joined the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista, or POUM). Item Description: Secker 1938, 1938. Book Condition: Near Fine. A first edition, first printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1938. A fine book with minuscule rubbing. There is no bumping to corners. The endpapers have a little of the usual offsetting. No inscriptions. A superb copy. In the rare dust wrapper priced correctly at 10s 6d net to the inside flap. Some light loss to the head of the spine (not affecting any lettering) and tiny triangular losses at foot of spine and at corner to the in-flaps. Not price-clipped and the off-white rear panel is lovely and clean. The spine is not tanned (as with most copies). There is a small round mark to the inside flap of the wrapper where a small price label appears to have been removed leaving a trace of gum residue. A remarkable copy of an extremely important and influential work that significantly enhanced Orwell's reputation. The copy of this book is from the very small first edition print run of 1,250 copies. Accompanied by a modern dark green grained buckram slip-case with the 'George Orwell' in gilt titles to the side. Bookseller Inventory # 9588
