About this Item: London John Bill, 1624. The Crowne of all Homers Workes: Batrachomyomachia, or, the Battaile of frogs and mise HOMER. CHAPMAN, George, [translator]. The Crowne of all Homers Workes: Batrachomyomachia, or, the Battaile of frogs and mise. His Hymn's and Epigrams London: John Bill, 1624. First edition of this translation. Quarto. [10], 207, [5] pp. including engraved title page (mounted) and numerous woodcut headpieces. Full eighteenth-century tan calf with gilt borders and corner devices on the covers, spine bands ruled in gilt, maroon morocco gilt spine label, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Professional restoration at front outer hinge with some loss to calf on upper front board. Title-page trimmed and mounted. Some very light soiling and foxing to a few leaves. Overall, a very handsome copy and very scarce. Chapman's well-known seventeenth-century rendering of Batrachomyomachia is also rather scarce: in the past twenty-five years, just three have come up for auction. According to Pforzheimer, copies of the mock-heroic parody of the Iliad, which famously describes an epic battle between frogs and mice, "sometimes occur bound with [Chapman's translations of] the Iliads and Odyssey with a general-title The Whole Works". Pforzheimer 165. STC 13628. HBS 66459. $8,500. Seller Inventory # 66459
