There are two title pages and the first, though rubbed, is hand coloured. Bound in recent tan leather with raised bands and red leather label with gilt titles. Illustrated engraved title-page signed on the plate "R. Gaywood fecit. 54", and engraved frontispiece of a coat-of-arms + 7 plates of Creation Robes of the nobility, and 41 text illustrations of heraldic shields. Very early binding of blind-ruled full leather. Front cover split at joint, holding on by 4cm of leather, exposed boards as pastedowns have separated from boards, front pastedown detached but present, engraved bookplate of William Thomas on exposed front board with the edges torn away as if someone tried to remove it. Early, if not contemporary, ink notes on detached pastedown, front free endpaper, and in white space beneath frontispiece, paper tanning and with occasional, very light foxing. Originally published in 1655, reprinted several times, "and for many years continued to be the most popular text-book with all who studied heraldry. The pretty plates by R. In this scarce edition of "Honor Redivivus," Matthew Carter, then in his Parliamentarian prison cell, gives a powerful essay on honor in general and of its particular divisions, and attacks the esoteric symbolism that did so much to discredit Renaissance heraldic writers. This work is complete with its seven striking plates of gentry in robes, and 40 armorial engravings in the text. Moderate age-toning and light and sporadic foxing throughout. About this Item: Printed for Henry Herringman, London, 1660. Second edn. 8vo, pp. xii, 251. Bound in contemporary blind-ruled calf (extremities of the spine chipped and edges little rubbed). Illustrated with an engraved title page, seven plates (of gentry in robes) and 40 armorial engravings in the text. The plates are engraved by Richard Gaywood (1630-1680), and are reduced copies of the whole length figures in Milles, Catalogue of honor. cf. Moule, Bibliotheca Heraldica. Later bookplate, contemporary ownership signature. Wing C660; Heltzel 283 (for the 1673 edition). Scarce, just four copies in OCLC (YUS, IUL, JHE, PUL). Carter (fl 1660) was a loyalist gentleman of position and influence in the county of Kent who fought against the Parliamentarians of Cromwell. He wrote an expose of the fighting and also "a useful little compilation from the best writers on heraldry . (first issued in 1655) . for many years [it][ continued to be the most popular text-book with all who studied heraldry."[DNB]. This contains extracts chosen and edited by Carter of the best writings on the origins and responsibilitis of privilege; or the rights and responsibilities of barons, lords, viscounts, knights, etc. This work was very popular and much reprinted.
