About this Item: Hood's Laboratories Lowell, MA ca. 1893, 1893. 4 pp. 44 x 56 cm. Newspaper format, browned, chipped at edges, 1 cm hole at intersection of folds at center of each page, poor. Four pages of testimonials of people who took Hood's Sarsaparilla and Pills and purified their blood, cured constipation, enlivened numb limbs, cured running sores and dyspepsia, and much more. Mrs. Rumrill of Royalton, VT was a "walking ghost" with gastric dyspepsia until she took Hood's Sarsaparilla. Edward O. Daugherty had no heart--no strength, no appetite, could not sleep. What a change Hood's Sarsaparilla effected!! Mrs. Ed Swan of Duncanville, IL had sick headaches for 21 years, and then it all ended with one bottle of Hood's. John Albert Lantz of Alvarado, TX was a child with great suffering from poison oak; then he took Hood's Sarsaparilla. Results were astonishing. Seller Inventory # 7741

Small booklet die-cut in the shape of a pansy bloom, H 10cm x L 10.6cm, with front and rear chromolithographed stiff paper covers featuring yellow and purple color flowers with small multicolored vignettes inset in flower's center stamen area. Front cover's gilt lettering a bit muted against purple background but still easily legible. Covers lightly soiled and light scuffed at edges; two small patches of surface abrasion to front cover. Pages 1-4 creased at top edges from fold-downs. Pictorial title page; b/w illustrations on most versos with text on opposing rectos; small b/w floral illustrations decorating text pages as well. Undated but OCLC cites circa 1890 and Victorian style graphics are certainly contemporary to 1880-1890 period. A very good copy of an excellent example of late 19th century American advertising of which OCLC cites only four copies among member libraries. Operating from 1875 to 1922 and based in Lowell, Massachusetts, C.I. Hood & Co. was among the largest patent medicine companies in the United States and offered a number of personal health products in additional to its flagship Hood's Sarsaparilla. As a leader in the development of color lithography as an advertising tool, C.I. Hood and Company produced all of its advertising in-house and owned twenty presses issuing a plethora of colorful trade cards, posters, calendars, pamphlets, and other ephemera all promoting the medicinal benefits of company products. Antique 'Hood's Sarsaparilla Calendar 1889' lithographed heading [without calendar pad]. 5 1/2" x 7 3/8" chromolithographed die-cut card with brass grommet, advertisement on reverse in navy ink. This is the fourth calendar in the long and popular series of calendars issued by C.I. Hood & Co. Condition is better than good (SEE BOTH PHOTOS) but with one long shallow horizontal crease (card does not 'give', i.e., bend at crease), one deeper crease at the upper right edge, and a small closed tear at the left edge with a bit of surface loss at that spot; age-toning to back. Images include children in sail boat with Hood's advertisement on sails, distinguished cats, an image of the factory (referred to as the "laboratory"), sewing circle, children on swings, the elevated railway of New York City, Hood Farm, a locomotive in the countryside passing barns, the Merry Maiden (champion sweepstakes cow), and verses including 'The Owl and the Pussycat'.8vo, 36pp. Illustrated printed stiff paper wrappers, with color illustration of child at the front wrapper painting the title, and "Our Spring Song" with songbirds illustration at rear wrapper.
