Item Description: These designs were preliminary to the final design for the 1950 Michael Joseph (London) edition. Two of these are in color, in similar motif as the published illustration, featuring the warship, cannons and flags; the images are approximately 5 x 7 1/2Ó, on larger sheets with pencil notes on the margins; hinged into larger mats, each of which is signed by the artist in pencil. There are three pencil sketches, approximately 5 1/2 x 8Ó or larger, signed on the drawings ÒBiroÓ and also on the larger mats. The two color illustrations, one in green and one in blue are highly finished, the former being especially detailed, and in the opinion of this cataloguer, superior to the one finally chosen. Given that exceptional detail and perhaps the more delicate color, the cost of reproduction might have influenced that decision. Bookseller Inventory # 31704
