Black slipcase lightly rubbed, color pictorial paste-on affixed upon rear panel, patches of surface peeling and edge chips to title label affixed upon front panel and spine with toning to latter, short tear to surface paper at bottom seam. 359 pages. Hardcover: H 20.75cm x L 14.5cm. No dust jacket (presumably as issued). Cream colored boards with bright gilt stamping, slight bumping and scuffing at spine ends. Interior pages are bright and clean and binding remains fairly crisp. A very good+ copy in a very good- slipcase. Reproduced from the illuminated manuscript belonging to The Guennol Collection and The Pierpont Morgan Library. With Introduction, 160 color plates mostly on rectos with explanatory text on opposing versos, and four appendices of which the last is a Selective Bibliography. {Approximate shipping weight 2.5 pounds.}.

The Hours of Catherine of Cleves is an ornately illuminated manuscript produced around 1440 by the anonymous Dutch artist known as the Master of Catherine of Cleves (active ca. 1435-60.) It is one of the most lavishly illuminated manuscripts to have survived from the 15th century. The Master of Catherine of Cleves is considered one of the finest and most original illuminators of medieval northern Netherland, and this manuscript has been described as one of the masterpieces of European illumination.
