Item Description: Faber, 1981. Hardback. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Very good first printing in very good dustwrapper. The book is square and tight. The pages are unmarked and clean but there is some spotting to the fore edge and top edge of the text block. The dustwrapper has been laminated and selllotaped to the boards. The dustwrapper is complete but the lower corner of the front flap has been folded and sellotaped down. There are no library markings to the text block but there is one 'mock' library accession number taped to the lower section of the spine panel beneath the laminate. This copy was one of a large number of books which were 'mocked up' to look like library books for the film 'The Reader'. The book was purchased from a Berlin bookshop earlier this year and then signed by the author at this year's Edinburgh festival. I can send photographs of the book ( and of Marilynne Robinson signing books at the festival). As a keen collector myself I make every effort to provide a high level of service. Enquiries welcomed. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 005455

Item Description: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, EB, 1981. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 8vo. Farrar Straus Giroux. 1980. 219 pgs. First Edition/First Printing. Signed by the Marilynne Robinson on the half title page. DJ has light shelf-wear present. Bound in half cloth boards. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. Previous owner's blindstamp present to second half title page. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. A modern classic, Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, who grow up haphazardly, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, their eccentric and remote aunt. The family house is in the small Far West town of Fingerbone set on a glacial lake, the same lake where their grandfather died in a spectacular train wreck, and their mother drove off a cliff to her death. It is a town "chastened by an outsized landscape and extravagant weather, and chastened again by an awareness that the whole of human history had occurred elsewhere." Ruth and Lucille's struggle toward adulthood beautifully illuminates the price of loss and survival, and the dangerous and deep undertow of transience.
