Item Description: Privately Printed, 1929. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This privately printed Limited Edition (there were 550 Numbered and Signed books) preceded the 1930 Chatto & Windus edition. My copy is numbered 233 and is signed by the author, Norman Douglas. Most of these Signed Limited Editions are selling for over $100, nearly half of those above $200.00. I've priced mine quite generously, particularly given its very good condition. You can see the covers in the photographs provided. Remarkably, 88 years has not been enough time to cause any soiling. And the wear is limited to three corners with a small spot of rub-through, and the two bottom corners of the spine label having minuscule loss. So check out the photos and see what you think. The interior of the book is just as clean. The pages look very good. They are not worn. I didn't see creasing or dogeared corners. There aren't any markings or attachments. And with the exception of the author's signature, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The middle and bottom edges are rough-cut (deckled). This book is square and straight and solidly bound. There are three or four instances where there is a small space between two opposite pages (like from the book being left lying open there) but in none of these instances is anything loose, not in the least. There's also a very thin space between the inside cover and first front end paper, beginning at the top edge but only going down about one inch. There isn't even a hint of looseness with the covers. The book feels very solid in your hands. There is a tiny, tiny tear off the top edge of the spine, and there is a little bit of a bend at both spine ends. I'm trying to identify and communicate anything that is imperfect. Finally there is a tiny label (1 X 1/2 inch) off the bottom edge of the rear inside cover. It says 'Phoenix Book Shop, 41 E. 49th St., New York City. That's it for imperfections. A very solid, clean book offered at a very low price. This book coveys the very frank and colorful thoughts and opinions of the author on the civilizations of Europe and India. They were first prompted by his reading of 'Mother India' (by Katherine Mayo) on a long train journey. Of the author The Spectator wrote 'he was a rebel, a scoffer, a hedonist, a pagan in the antique Mediterranean style. There was a time when, in smart literary conversations, Norman Douglas was regarded as one of the smartest things going.' You won't be bored. Bookseller Inventory # 001420
