ENGRAVING OF THOMAS HARDY'S STUDY AT MAX GATE by Howard Phipps. Dorchester: Dorset County Museum, 1993. In FINE condition, enclosed within a bi-fold folio, also FINE. This stunning and highly detailed engraving was printed from the wood on an Arches, acid-free mould-made paper, using an 1862 Albion hand press. This wood engraving had been officially commissioned by the Dorset County Museum. Although the complete edition was limited to two hundred and fifty signed copies, this is one of the fifty (#15) which were reserved for patrons of the Literary Gallery Appeal. The engraving measures 8 ½" x 7 ¼" with the folio measuring 7 ½" x 10 ¾". Howard Phipps studied Fine Art at the Gloucestershire College of Art in Cheltenham. He is a painter/printmaker with a special interest in wood engraving. A member of the Royal West of England Academy since 1979, and the Society of Wood Engravers since 1985, he has also been a frequent exhibitor at Royal Academy summer exhibitions where he received the Contemporary Print Award for color engraving. In this second collection by Howard Phipps, the engravings include people and are not all strictly interiors: they include the dining room and fireplace at John and Rosalind Randle's former home, Manor Farm, Andoversford. About this Item: (Andoversford: Whittington Press, 1985)., 1985. 7 x 9 3/4. Fifteen wood engravings (5 in color) on French-fold leaves, detailing a home's internal architecture and furnishings. Aqua silk boards stabbed and tied with ribbon in Oriental style, slipcase. An extra suite of the engravings, each signed, is held in a cloth portfolio. Leaf edges at spine have two one-inch long tan marks that appear to be binder's glue; all else fine in slipcase. No. 5 of 35 signed copies in this binding with a separate set of prints (from a total edition of 175 copies).
