The American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom cites this book since its time of publication as Banned. In 1957, US Customs seized 520 copies of the book. "Howl" and its publisher City Light Books became a landmark trail in First Amendment Rights and the book/poem was ruled by the court not obscene.
