About this Item: City Lights Publishers, San Francisco, 2006. Paperback. Condition: Fine. 1st. xiv, 224 pages, illustrations; 21 cm. Tight, clean copy. A fine copy of the first printing. "To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Howl and Other Poems, with nearly one million copies in print, City Lights presents the story of editing, publishing, and defending Allen Ginsberg's landmark poem within a broader context of obscenity issues and censorship of literary works. This collection begins with an introduction by publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who shares his memories of hearing 'Howl' first read at the 6 Gallery, of his arrest, and the subsequent legal defense of Howl's publication. Never-before--published correspondence of Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, Kerouac, Gregory Corso, John Hollander, Richard Eberhart, and others provides an in-depth commentary on the poem's ethi-cal intent and its social significance to the author and his contemporaries. A section on the public reaction to the trial includes newspaper reportage, op-ed pieces by Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti, and letters to the editor from the public, which provide fascinating background material on the cultural climate of the mid-1950s. A timeline of literary censorship in the United States places this battle for free expression in a historical context. Also included are photographs, transcripts of relevant trial testimony, Judge Clayton Horn's decision and its ramifications, and a long essay by Albert Bendich, the ACLU attorney who defended Howl on constitutional grounds. Editor Bill Morgan discusses more recent challenges to Howl in the late 1980s and how the fight against censorship continues today in new guises." - Publisher. CONTENTS: "Howl" at the frontiers, by Lawrence Ferlinghetti; Allen Ginsberg's Howl: a chronology, by Bill Morgan; Censorship milestones, by Nancy J. Peters; "Howl", by Allen Ginsberg; The Howl letters, by edited by Bill Morgan; The trial: press response. About this Item: City Lights Books, San Francisco, 1956. Second Edition. 5" x 6.13" pp. 44, One of the foundational troika of Beat Literature along with "On The Road" and "Naked Lunch". This Poem has survived a First Amendment challenge in court paving the way for a new generation of artists. This Second Edition is even more rare than the First as more than two-thirds of the original printing was confiscated and destroyed by the customs agency. As with first edition printing, Dedication to Lucian Carr is missing and book printing is in grey-blue. A light water spot along the half inch closest to the spine on this original printed white band pasted to black cover, which is all that keeps this from being a very fine copy. "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix," (p. 9). About this Item: City Lights, San Francisco, 1956. First edition of this principal work of the Beat Generation. Small octavo, original wrappers as issued. Introduction by William Carlos Williams. In very good condition with some minor browning to the extremities and a small chip to upper corner of rear panel. A nice example. Howl and Other Poems is a collection of poetry by Allen Ginsberg published November 1, 1956. It contains Ginsberg's most famous poem, "Howl", which is considered to be one of the principal works of the Beat Generation as well as "A Supermarket in California", "Transcription of Organ Music", "Sunflower Sutra", "America", "In the Baggage Room at Greyhound", and some of his earlier works. For printing the collection, the publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti, another well-known poet, was arrested and charged with obscenity. On October 3, 1957, Judge Clayton W. Horn found Ferlinghetti not guilty of the obscenity charge, and 5,000 more copies of the text were printed to meet the public demand, which had risen in response to the publicity surrounding the trial. "Howl and Other Poems" contains two of the most well-known poems from the Beat Generation, "Howl" and "A Supermarket in California", which have been reprinted in other collections, including the Norton Anthology of American Literature. An important association copy. Printed cover label lightly soiled, otherwise a fine copy First edition. One of 1000 copies printed letterpress at Villiers Publications Ltd. in England. Cook 4. Presentation copy, inscribed on the title-page by Ginsberg to the poet Jack Gilbert: "For Jack Gilbert, In Memory of your - my BEARD, Allen Ginsberg, Sept 1956." Gilbert has handwritten missing words in the ellipses, and made a few additional revisions, throughout the book. "Jack Gilbert didn't praise other contemporary poets often. But Jack always had good words for Ginsberg's early books, Howl and Kaddish. More than once, I recall Jack telling the story of his hearing Allen read from an early typescript of "Howl." From crossing paths in the poetry scene in San Francisco, Jack hadn't been very impressed by the poems of Allen's he'd heard. Then one day Allen called him and arranged to meet Jack in Sausalito where Jack was living at the time. Allen brought over his draft of "Howl" and read it to Jack in the apartment. Jack said he was stunned by the poem. It was nothing like he'd expected. Jack praised Allen for his breakthrough, and the poem as we all know made Allen's reputation, becoming a watershed of late twentieth-century poetry." - Jim Finnegan. Shortly after publication, the book was seized by U.S. Customs and the San Francisco police on the grounds that it was obscene; a long court trial ensued in which the literary community finally persuaded the court that the book was not. Dowden pp. 4-7. Seller Inventory # 22810

About this Item: City Lights Pocket Bookshop, San Francisco, 1956. Original wraps. Condition: Near Fine. A remarkable Association copy of the 1956 1st City Lights edition (preceded only by an impossibly scarce {purportedly 25 copies} 1955 mimeographed edition of only the poem "Howl"). This copy not only conforms to all the original issue points required of the inaugural Pocket Poet edition but is in beautiful, near-pristine condition. Furthermore, THIS COPY IS SIGNED BY 5 OF THE KEY FIGURES IN THE BOOK'S GENESIS: 1) ALLEN GINSBERG (on the title page); 2) LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI (on the copyright page); 3) LUCIEN CARR (on the dedication page); 4) WILLIAM BURROUGHS (also on the dedication page); and 5) CARL SOLOMON (on the first blank endpaper). In other words, this copy is signed by the book's author, its publisher and by 3 of its 5 dedicatees (only Jack Kerouac's and Neal Cassady's signatures are missing from this copy). Notably, of the 5 signatures, Lucien Carr's appears to be the most elusive of all on copies of "Howl". We know that his relationship with the Beats grew tense early on and that he insisted his name be removed from all subsequent printings of "Howl". We also know that Carr himself introduced William Burroughs (an old friend from their St. Louis upbringing) to Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg --and that Carr's infamous career at Columbia (as documented in the 2013 film "Kill Your Darlings") saw him not only as an important muse to this budding literary scene but also, incredibly, as someone convicted of homicide and sent to prison (in spite of Kerouac's best efforts to help him cover up the crime). A fresh, tight copy, immaculate internally and easily Near Fine overall, while legitimately approaching Fine (even down to its unrusted staple). Also includes a former owner's hand-made chemise, a handsome, folded cardboard reproduction of the book's front cover. (Somewhere along the line, the former owner of this copy EVEN HAD GINSBERG SIGN THE CHEMISE "Allen Ginsberg for P.O." {Peter Orlovsky?}). Of the 1,000 copies initially published, this must certainly rank as among the most historic --and significant. Seller Inventory # 13503
