About this Item: W. C. Borrodaile, New York, NY, 1830. Hardcover. First American Edition. This is a hardcover book in leather with a worn, but interesting spine. The book has two title pages, one with the full list of games (29) , another with a short title in mixed fonts and flourishes. Both are dated 1830. The remainder of the title page that lists all the games is "Together with an Analysis of the Game of Chess, and an Engraved Plate for the Instruction of Beginners. Carefully Revised from the Last London Edition with Several Additions". The Publisher name, date, and address Is the same - W. C. Borrodaile, 1830) . There are two engraved plates with game boards, one is a fold-out. There are several plates that appear to be hand-set. There is a engraved frontispiece of four people at a table each with a fan of cards held in their hands (Engraver - Tuthill) . There is a former owner name in ink at the top of the first title page. The leather covers show wear and a remnant of some tape. The spine is exposed. The cords that form the bands are exposed, the leather from the bottom panel is partially missing, exposing the gatherings (signatures) . The title on the spine is just readable. Other small pieces of the spine leather are missing. Somewhat charming in spite of wear. An old attempt at reinforcement of the interior hinges is suffering from the loss of glue. The page with the frontispiece is partly glued near the hinge. Though the covers are secured, the cords have expanded to form a space gap at the hinge of the front cover. The rear end paper is missing. Some pages have foxing (light brown spots - a chemical reaction within the paper from impurities in the paper or the environment) . The image of the card players serve to create the atmospher in which the book was consulted and add to the charm. Small (5 1/2" x 3" x 1" thick). ; 12mo; 288 pages. Seller Inventory # 4795
