Inner hinges are not cracked and are solid with light age browning. A scarce copy.

Inscribed and signed by author to the otherwise blank FFE. Ballistic tests on the bullets that killed U.S. Sen. (and former Louisiana Gov.) Huey Long were never conducted. No autopsy was performed (though it's obvious his surgeon did not realize a bullet had punctured his liver, which caused his death as it continued to bleed for days.) The author's aunt -- Jessica Lauren Fields -- heard people talking about the $600,000 contract to assassinate Long -- who threatened a 1936 populist challenge to dilettante Franklin Roosevelt -- and reported it to authorities. She was hauled into a kangaroo court, deemed "mentally incompetent," and locked up in a D.C. "mental institution" for the rest of her life. To keep her from talking about the oil companies, the railroad companies, and the opposing politicians who funded that hit, she was allowed no visitors for her remaining 53 years. True stories are generally told in "fictional novels' to avoid lawsuits, though anyone who was an adult when The Kingfish was shot in 1935 had to be in their 80s -- most of them long dead -- by the time this book was published in 1997. Darkened topstain seems nearly undisturbed. Red cloth is BRIGHT and clean with most minor soiling near edges. A few minor scuffs along foot of backstrip from shelf rub. An incredible copy that is well preserved. DJ in lesser condition as there are a few open chips and some soiling, but importantly, this is a rare DJ and it still carries its bright orange / red hue. A desirable copy of the uncommon classic.
