Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Frontispiece, [xiii], 554 pp; "with over 100 drawings by Wm. P. Didusch and three color prints." Original cloth. Very Good. First Edition. SIGNED BY HUGH YOUNG: "To/ Arthur/ with the love/ admiration and/ gratitude of/ Hugh Young/ Sep 20/40." Offered with: TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, BY HUGH H. YOUNG to Arthur B. Cecil: Letterhead: Dr. Hugh H. Young, Dr. Walter L. Denny, Office, Brady Urological Institute, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD. October 22, 1940. My dear Arthur: After reading your letter, my secretary said "Isn't he sweet?" You are not only that but the most wonderfully thoughtful assistant I ever had. The interest you have shown in my work has always pleased me greatly, but I am amazed to hear of the trouble you took in trying to have someone write it up. You have indeed yourself been one of the finest products of the urological department of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and no one has done more brilliant work. I am indeed very proud of you and appreciate more than I can express the kind things you say about the book and Mother and Father. It rejoices me to know that you are improving steadily. I hope you will bring the charming Henrietta on to see me before long. With my kindest regards to you both, I am Your very devoted [a very scrawled and hardly readable signature of Hugh H. Young]. The letter is in an envelope with the typed address to: Dr. Arthur B. Cecil 251 Muirfield Road Los Angeles, California. The envelope is glued to the front pastedown. Beneath Young's inscription on the front flyleaf, Arthur Cecil has written: Arthur Bond Cecil 251 Muirfield Road Los Angeles. My signature. On p. 245 of his autobiography Hugh Young includes Arthur B. Cecil in a list of assistant resident surgeons in urology at the Hopkins Hospital. Scott, in his Urology at Hopkins, gives 1912-13 as the years when Cecil was assistant to Hugh Young. Young makes more frequent reference in his autobiography to Howard L. Cecil. According to Scott (p. 18), Howard Cecil was the brother of Arthur Cecil. Arthur Cecil graduated from the Johns Hopkins medical school in 1909. Signed by Author(s).
