About this Item: University Books Inc., New Hyde Park, NY, 1961. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Large octavo. 416pp. Green cloth with gilt title, etc, on black title label to spine, top edge green, index. One of the classics of Psychical Research, described by William James as "the first attempt to consider the phenomena of hallucination, hypnotism, automatism, double personality and mediumship, as connected parts of one whole subject." This "abridged" edition of Myers text is the most common - given that the 1903 First edition was over 1,300 pages and thus was and remains unlikely to attract any but the most serious readers. Old "new stock" thus unused, but rather dusty and with some shelf wear to the edges after sitting around various warehouses over the years. Top edge a bit dusty, otherwise a solid and unmarked Near Fine copy in VG dust jacket. (Dust jacket a little edgeworn with some chipping at spine ends, price clipped). Seller Inventory # 20610

About this Item: Longmans, Green, & Co., London, 1903. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1st ed., 3rd printing. Two volumes. Cloth with gilt spine titles. xx, 660, xlvi, 700 pp, 40 page publisher's catalog. Very Good, end papers are tanned. A nice, tight set. Laid in is a small ALS signed by Myers on his note paper with his Leckhampton House, Cambridge letterhead and dated May 31, 1891. *** The letter, 5.5 x 4 inches, is to Lord de Vesci regarding his wife's paranormal experience as related in this book. Lady de Vesci had written to Myers on May, 24, 1891, just a week before Myers writes this reply and relates how she was suddenly moved to send a telegram to an old friend in China at the cost of 5 pounds. Unbeknown to Lady de Vesci her friend was ill and died just 24 hours after receiving her telegram. Lady de Vesci believes she was moved to suddenly send the telegram by some unknown, paranormal feeling. Myers writes to her husband asking him to confirm her account of the incident. Letters from Myers are rare and one directly related to his investigation of a paranormal incident reported in this, his most famous work, are virtually never encountered.***. Signed by Author(s).
