About this Item: Constable and Co, London, 1918. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. First Edition. 168 pages; Publisher's original binding of cream cloth spine lettered in gilt over with drab gray boards. Date on titlepage is 1918, no other mention of edition/printing on verso. Spine is toned and shows wear as one might expect at the corners of the boards, the endpapers are modestly toned (a reaction to the glue used in the binding), and there is an abbreviated signature from a former owner on the front free endpaper, tight and clean, -- still a very nice example of Arthur Waley's extraordinary and influential translations from Chinese and Japanese classics. Arthur David Waley was born as Arthur David Schloss, son of economist David Frederick Schloss. He changed his surname to his paternal grandmother's maiden name, Waley, in 1914; many Englishmen changed from German-sounding names at the beginning of the great war. After taking a Classics degree from Kings College, Cambridge, Waley was appointed Assistant Keeper of Oriental Prints and Manuscripts at the British Museum in 1913. While working at the museum, he taught himself Chinese and Japanese, partly to help catalogue the paintings in the Museum's collection. The fluency and mastery he achieved in both these languages is both remarkable and nearly unprecidented. Ezra Pound was instrumental in getting Waley's first translations into print in 'The Little Review,' one of the major so-called "little magazines." This is the first book edition of Waley's first translations to appear to the public. The reception of this, and the larger American edition which appeared in the following year, 1919, eventually led to another fifteen books of translations from Waley, who was motivated and enabled to quit his position at the museum to devote himself to full time literary work. There is a fascinating connection between this copy of his first book and the "Little Review" -- this copy has the pencil signature of Elspeth Champcommunal -- a noted fashion designer and the first editor of Vogue Magazine in Britain (1916-1922). Champcommunal became a house designer with the House of Worth in 1936 and was a member of the Incorporated Society of London Fashion Designers. She was also the long time companion of Jane Heap, who was co-editor (with Margaret Anderson) of 'The Little Review,' -- Mrs. Champcommunal (widow of a French painter who was killed in the great War) also was a noted pupil of Gurdjieff and teacher of the all-women Gudjieff group in London known as "The Rope.".
