Item Description: Ottawa City, Canada West, 1855., 1855. Folio (13 2/8 x 10 inches). Tinted lithographed title-page and frontispiece, folding lithographed map of north-eastern America, and 13 fine tinted lithographed plates by Bufford of Boston (one or two insignificant spots). Original brown cloth, gilt (extremities a little worn with loss). Provenance: with the engraved bookseller's ticket of Dawson's of Montreal on the front paste-down. First edition, and an attractive copy. "The River Ottawa offers, to the observation of the tourist, objects of the wildest and most romantic interest: there is the mighty Cataract and the silent, sleeping Lake; the stupendous work of the highest art, and the rude simplicity of the roughest shanty; there is the dense forest and the light grove; Nature, in all her varied phases; the work of man in its simplest and its loftiest development. The Ottawa country is little known; but no man visits its magnificent scenery, no man begins to understand its enormous resources, without an expression of admiration at the one and surprise at the other; well, indeed, did the red men, who in ages past gave it its christening name, call it, in their beautiful and harmonious language, the "Great River" (Preface). The fine lithographed plates include: Rideau Falls, the locks at the entrance to Rideau Canal, view from Barrack Hill down the Ottawa, the junction of the Gatineau with the Ottawa, the Suspension Bridge over Chaudiere Falls, the Big Kettle and the Chasm over Chaudiere Falls, a view from inside the Chasm, the Timber slide on Hull side Ottawa City, etc. Abbey, Travel 628; Sabin 33937. Item Description: Ottawa City: Published by Wm. S.Hunter Jr., 1855 [1856]., 1856. folio. pp. 19. text in double columns. folding map & 15 tinted lithographed plates (incl. title). original blind & gilt-stamped cloth, rebacked with spine mounted, gilt edges (spine ends & corners chipped & frayed, hinges reinforced, front flyleaf replaced, text lightly embrowned). armorial bookplate of Henry Barrett Lennard. Second Edition. The charming oval lithographs, measuring 8 3/8" by 11 5/8", were published by Hunter himself and lithographed in Boston by J.H.Bufford, who produced many early views for Nathaniel Currier. The young Winslow Homer and John Perry Newell, who were apprenticed to Bufford at the time, were responsible for drawing the lithographs, those by Homer being his earliest substantial published lithographs. "They form an interesting series: Hunter was as much of a topographical draughtsman as an artist, but the pictures are pleasant little ones likely to increase in interest and value. They contain several good views of Chaudière Falls, on the Ottawa River, a natural phenomenon very popular with artists." (Spendlove) Other subjects include Rideau Falls, the Ottawa River viewed from Barrack Hill, Junction of the Gatineau, the approach to Suspension Bridge, and Timber Slide on the Hull side. The print run on the first edition was small, and when the Canadian Legislative Assembly ordered 140 copies for its members in the spring of 1856 (Ottawa was then being considered as a contender for the government capital), Hunter had to prepare a second edition. It is distinguished by the use of letters rather than numerals in the signature marks and the addition on the map of several rail lines around Chicago. Three of the views were also redrawn.
