Item Description: San Francisco, CA: James H. Barry Co., 1923. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.[8], 245 [5]. With 21 illustrated plates, including a title page 'drawn by my good friend and fellow archer, Remington Schuyler, in exchange for a good yew bow and a dozen shafts'. In publisher's cream quarter cloth with light brown leather-effect cloth boards. Brown titles to paper labels on spine and stamped to upper board. Black ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper, dated 1938. Lightly browned throughout. Significant loss to browned title labels on spine. Deep browning and some rubbing to outer. Good overall. Exceedingly rare in this first edition, Pope's guide to making and using bows is considered the beginning of modern archery. Before informing the reader about the best techniques for making bows, fletching arrows, shooting the bow, and hunting various North American big game, Pope introduces his Yana Indian friend Ishi, whom he met while studying medicine at the University of California. Pope claims that Ishi, who died in 1916, was the last 'wild Indian' to live the majority of his life beyond the reach of Western civilization. Before he died Ishi taught Pope how to make and shoot bows in the traditional manner, enabling him to successfully hunt bears on an expedition in Yellowstone park in 1920.
