Item Description: Various 1916-1952, 1916. Albums range in size between 7 x 11 to 12.5 x 11.5 with various styles, etc.; photos range in size from 3.25 x 2.25 to 5 x 4, with a few slightly larger images, almost all are b&w with a handful of later colored photos. Covers have some wear, at least half have loose/detached pages with edgewear, an occasional photo missing, albums are completely filled with the exception of one that is 3/4 full, overall good/very good condition. The majority of the photos are labeled and dated. All are original photos except for one album from 1918-1950 which has older reprints. The Huron Mountain Club was established in 1889 as the Huron Mountain Shooting and Fishing Club, becoming the Huron Mountain Club in 1905. This exclusive club for the wealthy offered its members hunting, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, swimming, baseball and flying a seaplane (according to one photograph). Yhe members came from the Chicago and Detroit elite. Last names of some of the Detroiters: Denby, Dykema, Ferry, Ford (Henry), Ledyard, McGraw, McMillan, Russel. Membership was limited to 50 main members who could live on the premises, and 80 associate members who could visit but had to dwell elsewhere. Henry Ford, of which there are three photos and one of his yacht (two original and two older reprints) became a member in 1929. At that time, there was a waiting list but Mr. Ford didn't want to wait; he facilitated his entry into the club by buying adjacent land and refusing to let a state highway go across it. He spent $100,000 to build a cabin on Lot 22 in 1930. Mr. Ford was a helpful member, offering ideas about building a water power plant on the falls of Mountain Stream and helping fellow member Thayer McMillan, a director of Packard, with Packard's recent contract to build Rolls Royce engines for the Air Force. Another club that Henry Ford belonged to and Roy D. Chapin of American Motors was a past president of, was the even more exclusive Fontinalis Club in Otsego County, Michigan, of which there are 31 photos + a couple dozen negatives (nice snow-shoeing images) in this collection. Not much is known about this club outside of its membership. It was founded in 1902 by Detroit businessmen; their first clubhouse was an old train car nicknamed "The Jumper" which was parked by a stream and came complete with cooking and dining facilities; an early photo accessible online shows a small group of men standing outside the train car with African-American man wearing a waiter's outfit. "The Jumper" also had sleeping accommodations. Later, more permanent structures were built including a clubhouse, groundskeeper's house and a house for female family members. Fontinalis offered hunting, fishing, snowshoeing, etc. Other photos not related to either club show nice family shots including their local area i.e. Detroit, Belle Isle, Detroit University School (photos of the school damaged by fire), Grosse Pointe. Further locations include Dobbs Ferry, Cape Cod, Niagara Falls, Provincetown, Buffalo, Mt. Vernon, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, Grand Canyon, Welland Canal, Camp Kieve, Taft School, Beaver Rock Club, Ste. Marguerite, Quebec. Activities include high school graduation, horse shows, visiting a college, Christmas, family get-togethers, etc. COMES WITH: Bentley, Richard and Richard A. Rice. HURON MOUNTAIN HERITAGE, A Miscellany of Writings Relating to the Huron Mountain Club. . . Conceived by Fredric Schreiber. Privately printed 1961. 10 x 7.5, spiral bound, 277 pp. Light soiling to front cover and first page else very good. A good history of the club, the land, the animals, etc., with reminiscenses by the members. AND ALSO: Andrew, Mary Raymond Shipman. THE SCARLET IBIS. N.P. (Scribners) (August 1912). Illustr., 10 x 7, homemade decorated boards with silk ribbon ties, pp 203-220. Covers worn, stained and darkened, couple of pages with tear/hole at bottom margin, pages toned and edge worn, a rather worn copy. Amateurishly handmade book with "The Scarlet Ibis" handw.
