About this Item: The John C. Winston Company, Chicago Philadelphia Toronto, 1937. Hard Back. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Lawson, Robert (illustrator). First Editon. 319 Pages plus an Eleven Page Index. Tan boards with black and red lettering. Attractive red endpapers illustrated with church, trees, and farm scene plus Walt Whitman's poem I Hear America Singing. Book is in beautiful condition. Tight square and no bumped corners. There is just a hint of age-tanning to some pages. Otherwise the interior text pages are flawless. Dust jacket is a bit tattered but complete with flap price $2.00. This book belongs to boys in a very special way as every poem in it was chosen by them. Boys in many parts of the country told the author about these poems. They sang them to her in the schoolroom, or on a trail with her, or as they sat around the evening fireside. Many of these poems are concerned with the work men do. They are the words to songs sung by sailors and boatmen at work in time to the music. Also words cowboys sing to keep them company on long rides. There are many poems sung or recited about the work of stage drivers, trappers, hunters, teamsters, section hands, engineers, miners, prospectors, ranchmen, sheepherders, farmers, shanty men, lumberjacks, canalmen, whalers. They are all close to the affairs of common life and use a common language. The actions are lively, dramatic, dangerous. The scenes often remote and romantic. The emotions are uncomplicated, easy to sympathize with. Singing such songs, reading such stories, is like being with grown men at work. This is an instinctive pleasure for boys, and it is a natural part of their education. The author has drawn thirty-seven illustrations. Twenty-six of the drawings are printed in two colors. Ruth Barnes lived in Ypsilanti Michigan when this book was published in 1937. It was on the front porch of her summer shack on Lake Huron that she first typed I Hear America Singing. Size: 6 1/2" X 8 1/4". Seller Inventory # 15251

About this Item: John C. Winston, Philadelphia, 1937. Orig Tan Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good (Brodarted). Lawson, Robert (Illus); (illustrator). First Edition Thus. This 346 page offering is presented in the publishers original tan cloth binding protected by the original and now very scarce and UNCLIPPEDdust jacket which has been further protected by professionally applied Brodart mylar. Poetry from different regions of the United States with b&w and 2-color artwork by Lawson throughout. Scarce. The quite rare original dustwrapper is UNCLIPPED and has a few edge-cracks. There appears to be nothing noticeable, other than a number of fairly faint "Nathaniel Hawthorne School Property" stampings on front and rear end papers, and some very interesting penciled comments on several of the first pages, to add or detract from this being a very nostalgic rock solid premium offering awaiting an adoptive and appreciative new home. Enough said though of the instant gratification of rare offerings and wise bibliophilic investments. The symphony of time, which obliterates most imaginative things, adds only lustre to the embryonic paradigm of these ageless and insightful revelations of both the bodily and spiritual sides of total societal/envirnomental symbosis. Read to learn and enjoy; go forth to share and enjoin- in the Hirschfeld Galleries' tradition of both collective and retroactive self-actualization since 1931. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover. Seller Inventory # 005629
