Item Description: Doubleday, Garden City, NY, 1973. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. Later printing. Doubleday, 1973. Very Good. Doubleday, 1973. Very Good. Margaret Craven (1901-1980) wrote this book, her first, in 1967. She wrote several more books, but her career was cut short by eye problems. Needless to say, she will be remembered for this effort alone. The sale volume is a very well preserved copy of the 1973 first, a later edition, since 1973 is mentioned on copyright page with no mention of first edition. Brown cloth binding with owl illustration on front board and lettering on spine, all in gold. Obvious bumps but no other marking or damage. Unclipped dust jacket is bright and clean but has some minor tears and chipping at top and bottom of spine. A very attractive copy of the classic. 166 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 002947

CONTENTS: 1/Yes, My Lord-No, My Lord 2/The Depth of Sadness 3/Che-kwa-la 4/Come Wolf, Come Swimmer. SYNOPSIS: A young minister is sent by his bishop deep into the seacoast wilds of British Columbia to a parish of Kwakiutl Indians called Kingcome. The Tsawataineuk live in an inlet village and take their sustenance from the sea and from the forest. The bishop has not told him this, but the priest has only two years left to live. Among these vanishing Indians, Mark Brian learns enough of the meaning of life not to fear death. Through his faith and humanity, he becomes part of the village, of the Indians themselves, and witness to their rituals and beliefs and the gradual disintegration of a culture. Then, on a cold winter evening, when he hears the owl in the forest call his name, he understands what is going to happen. Margaret Craven was born in Helena, Montana, spent her early years in Puget Sound, Washington, and graduated from Stanford University. Her short stories have appeared in many American magazines; a large number have been reprinted in England, and several have been translated into other languages. This is her first novel.
