Item Description: U.K / Michael Joseph, 1957. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. This was a literary hoax that began as a practical joke by late-night radio raconteur Jean Shepherd. Shepherd was highly annoyed at the way that the bestseller lists were being compiled in the mid-1950s. Bookstores became interested in carrying Ewing's novel, which reportedly had been banned in Boston. When publisher Ian Ballantine, novelist Theodore Sturgeon & Shepherd met for lunch, Ballantine hired Sturgeon to write this novel based on Shepherd's outline. A 2nd impression hardback, with its dustjacket in near to fine condition-edges of the dustjacket a little scuffed. (221 pages). Bookseller Inventory # 3500

Item Description: Ballantine Books, 1956. First Edition. I, LIBERTINE, Ballantine, 1956, first edition, some light dust-soil to the t.p.e.'s and the fore edge, else a vg+ copy in an attractive but less than vg dust-wrapper with some fading to the dust-wrapper spine and some other light wear and tear. This copy SIGNED in full by well known and beloved fantasy artist, alas now deceased, Frank Kelly Freas, who executed the artwork for the front dust-wrapper panel of his book. (I believe the anecdote goes like this: Author and radio personality Jean Shepherd, while in New York / New Jersey, reasoned that perhaps there were two types of people: Day people and Night people. To help demonstrate this point, he and his late night radio show listeners made up a book and an author along with biographay and then asked his audience to ask for the book at their local bookstores. Very soon afterward, the demand grew for the non-existent book world wide with some even citing reviews and quoting from the non-existent authors other works. Things became so strange that Shepherd now began to wonder if anything he had ever read or ever heard about in his entire life was true. Later, after the story broke that indeed there was no such book, and while having lunch with noted writer Ted Sturgeon, Sturgeon and Shepherd decided to collaborate on such a book when Sturgeon told Shepherd that his publisher, Ian Ballantine, was frantically searching for the paperback rights !!! Thus----I, LIBERTINE.). Bookseller Inventory # 08931
