182 pp.; 223 colour illus. of Iban objects, field photographs throughout, maps, index, bibliography. Amsterdam/Leiden, 2005. Hbk. Reference work on the Ibanic peoples from Borneo covering all art forms such as weaving, wooden statuary, tattoo designs, plaiting, pottery, carving bone into sword hilts, iron into swords, and brass into jewelry. This publication is especially strong on textiles, masks, weapons and wood carvings. Most objects originate from high status Sarawakian families and have not been published before. The Iban pose an answer to the question about the origins of art. They use art to choose their mate or spouse. A good artist demonstrates intelligent genes and a partner wants to ensure that such genes are passed on to his or her children. For the Iban, therefore, art is the ultimate IQ test. In addition to explaining the various Iban art forms, this study demonstrates this tradition through extensive reference to Iban poetry - itself an important art form. First Edition
VG bright tight copy in publishers decorated boards in slightly rubbed dustjacket. 1st edition, 1st issue. Drawing on the vast repertoire of 'oral literature' of the Iban, this book shows how Iban women ritualized art in such a way that textiles drove men to take heads. The Iban people to Borneo had no scholastic aptitude tests to help them assess the intellectual capacity of a prospective mate and so they turned to art. Women looked for an intelligent and courageous man to protect them and pass on his gifts to their children. The performance indicators were a trophy head and demonstrable artistic talent. Men simply sought an intelligent woman. The performance indicator was the completion of a complex woven design in ikat, sungkit or pilih which displayed well formed hooks throughout the design. Consequently, art was consciously used by the Iban as a marker of intelligence and a basis for sexual selection. ISBN 906832540X.
