Item Description: Random House, NY, 1946. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. ***** This is the true first edition, first printing (with "FIRST EDITION" stated on the copyright page, and with no later printings listed). The dust jacket is the true first printing jacket. ***** This book is SIGNED by the author (Eugene O'Neill) on the second page. The author has not inscribed this book to anyone; it is just signed by the author. ***** Signed exaples of this first edition are extremely rare. O'Neill suffered from Parkinson's tremor, and signed books after 1943 are nearly impossible to find. His signature in this book is somewhat shaky (as is all known authentic signatures and correspondence from this period) ***** Included with this book is a short hand-written note (not by O'Neill) from 1975 mentioning that the father of the note-writer was a friend of the O'Neill family, and Carlotta Monterey (O'Neill's last wife). ***** Very nice hardcover with dust jacket. There is NO writing, NO bookplates, and NO remainder marks. It is NOT a book club edition and NOT a former library book. The dust jacket is NOT price-clipped ($2.75). ***** CONDITION: The book and the dust jacket are in very nice NEAR FINE condition. We include new mylar (clear) dust jacket covers with all books at no extra charge. ***** OUR GUARANTEE TO YOU: All books are guaranteed to be as described. We believe that no sale is complete until you are happy. Any book is returnable for a full refund (including postage) if you're not 100% satisfied. ***** All books are packaged very carefully and shipped via USPS Mail with Delivery Confirmation. Thank you! Item Description: New York: Random House, 1946. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo., blue cloth lettered in gilt; dust jacket, soiled with several inconsequential chips. First edition. (Atkinson A 35-I-1.a.) A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Justine Gallant -- with the deepest appreciation for her kindness and sympathy and infinite tact during my long illness. God bless you! Eugene O'Neill, April 1948," on the front endpaper. On the second front endpaper, Jason Robards, Jr., the legendary actor, penned: "Jason Robards, `The Iceman Cometh,' Circle in the Square, 1956." Below Robards's inscription, the actor E. G. Marshall added, "To J. Gallant, with pleasure E. G. Marshall." ------ For the last ten years of his life, O'Neill suffered from multiple health problems, notably depression, alcoholism, and a severe Parkinsons-like tremor in his hands. He would labor to write, his penmanship sometimes rather shaky, as was the case with this intimate inscription to Justine Gallant. Like O'Neill's other close friend, the restaurateur Barney Gallant, Justine was an ardent admirer, who cared deeply for the playwright's wellbeing. Gallant thought the world of E. G. Marshall and Jason Robards for helping to ensure O'Neill's legacy. ------ "The Iceman Cometh" premiered on Broadway at the Martin Beck Theatre on October 9, 1946, directed by Eddie Dowling. E. G. Marshall played Willie Oban, a Harvard Law School alumnus. Marshall had struck up a friendship with the playwright, claiming after their first meeting that he "had known O'Neill a thousand years." Marshall and other established actors, including Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift, would become original members of the Actors Studio. Perhaps Marshall's best known performance was in Sidney Lumet's 1957 courtroom drama "12 Angry Men." ------ An Off-Broadway production of "The Iceman Cometh," staged after O'Neill's death in 1956, featured Jason Robards as Hickey, the iconic philosophical salesman. Directed by José Quintero, the production, an unqualified success, established the play as a great modern tragedy. Robards revisited "The Iceman Cometh," starring in the acclaimed 1960 television film production, which earned him an Obie Award. He would portray Hickey in another Broadway revival also staged by Quintero in 1985. A powerful presentation copy with a distinguished provenance. Inscribed by Author(s). Item Description: New York: Random House, 1946, 1946. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in gilt on a red ground, top edge red. With the dust jacket, supplied. Spine very slightly faded; an excellent copy in the jacket, small chip to head of spine, a little rubbing to extremities. First edition, first printing. Rare presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Shirlee Weingarten on the front free endpaper: "To Shirlee Weingarten / with affection and gratitude / for all she has done since the / first typing job - all the kindness / in the many small things that only / the sensitive do, as the sensitive appreciate. / I have a guilty feeling I have not / been sufficiently appreciative at times, or have even / been downright rude & taking it for granted / you should light cigarettes for playwrights! I hope / I didn't. If I did, it wasn't meant." O'Neill had Parkinsons from 1943, and copies thus inscribed (at such painstaking, if barely legible, length) are consequently rare. The recipient seems from the inscription to have been O'Neill's amanuensis, making this a touching and close association. Atkinson A35-I-1.a. Bookseller Inventory # 119980
