About this Item: Melchior Kusel - Johann Leonhard Buggel, Augustano - Nurnberg, 1679. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. Augustano - Nurnberg: Melchior Kusel - Johann Leonhard Buggel, 1679. First edition [1679-80]. In German. Imperfect copy with an interesting provenance. Book of beautifully produced engravings of scenes from the Old and New Testaments, previously owned by George W. Van Horne [1833-1895], appointed by Abraham Lincoln as US Consul at Marsailles. Includes an 1870 letter signed by Van Horne discussing how he purchased the book from a certain bookseller "of the highest reputation for integrity" and that it was one of only thirty copies printed, which we now strongly suspect to be untrue. What the bookseller also neglected to inform him was that there are 11 (of 249) plates missing, with no evidence that they were ever bound in. Full contemporary leather with red spine label, raised spine bands with compartments decorated with a pomegranate motif, a total of 238 plates printed on one side only, six page of text, title page, dedication, engraved pages dividing the sections, colophon. Covers rubbed at the edges with partial surface crack to the front joint, covers well attached, text block sound, partially removed and unidentiable armorial bookplate on the front pastedown, neatly written note in French (appears to relate to a book catalogue dated 1827) on the front free endpaper, pages clean with occasional light foxing, chips to two edges, long horizontal closed tear to one section title, two plates bound out of order. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 031780

Part 1 comprises [74] plates, Part 2: 87 plates (numb. 2-87+ 1 unnumb. plate), Part 3:[77] plates; 1st engraved title signed ‘Sebastian Furck fecit’; 2nd engraved title illustrated with 4 separate images, 3rd engraved title with 6 separate images; 3rd title within typographical border. Johann Ammon (d.1655), influential publisher and bookseller in Frankfurt, dedicates part 1 to his patrons and cousins, Johann (n.1) & Anna Catharina von den Birghden, part 2 to Johann Jacob Dimpffel, merchant at Frankfurt, and part 3 (dedication here in Latin) to the jurist Justus Jungmann (1570-1651), counsellor to the Landgrave of Hesse. Tailend of 2nd engraved title lightly shaved by the binder, tailend blank corners of last 3 leaves of last part with minimal traces of waterstaining, otherwise a remarkably good copy in its first binding entirely unrestored in its original state.
