Texto en italiano. Nella Stamperia di Piergiovanni Costantini. In Perugia, MDCCLXIV-VII (1764-1767). 5 vols. Perugia: Stamperia di Piergiovanni Costantini, 1764-67". " LIBROS ANTIGUOS. Bookseller Inventory # 12908989

Dedicata all'Illustre, & M. Reu. Padre D. Massimo da Mantoua Dacano, & Vicario perpetuo di Ciue. In Padova per Pietro Paolo Tozzi. 1618. 640 pages. Three Quarters leather. Initials P.B. in gold at the base of the spine. Marbled paper over boards. 306 woodblock illustrations + portrait of the author Cesare Ripa – (c1560-c1623) actual name was Giovanni Campani. Majordomo (butler) to Cardinal Antonnio Maria Salvini. Ripa's Iconologia was originally published in 1593, in an edition with no illustrations. It was republished and enlarged in 1603 (and regularly thereafter) with the illustrations for which it is so justly reknowned. The Iconologia was intended for the interpretation of symbols in art, but immediately became a resource for artists themselves. Ripa combined information from Emblem Books, Sculpture, Coins, Engravings, Herbals, Bestiaries and more into a single volume for the interpretation of Symbolism. His Iconologia was the first reference to do this. "Today Ripa's Iconologia is an essential primary source for how baroque symbolism was understood. Although it is clear that artists used his interpretations liberally and sometimes not at all, other subsequent artistic compositions can be traced directly to Ripa. Giovan Francesco Guerrieri's paintings in the Palzzo Borghese in Rome and Francesco Pianta's carvings in the Scuola di San Rocco in Venice are peculiar representations that are taken directly from Ripa (Praz). (dictionaryofarthistorians)" There were 9 Italians editions of Ripa's Iconologia, of which the 1618 edition is the fifth. The 1593 edition was 302 pages long and contained no illustrations. The 1603 edition was 528 pages long and contained 152 woodcuts. The 1611 edition had 551 pages and contained 200 illustrations. I haven't been able to find a 1613 edition for comparison. And this 1618 edition has 640 pages and has 306 illustrations. Each illustration represents a concept, such as Wealth, Purity, or Love. Of particular interest is the illustration of America, which appears on page 353 of this edition. America was still quite 'new' in 1618 & this image is an early enough characterization of the new land to be of great historical interest. America did not appear in the 1593 edition, but I have not been able to determine if it made its first appearance in 1603 edition. The image shows (translation from the 1709 first English edition of the Iconologia) "A woman almost naked; a tann'd aspect; has a Veil folded over her Shoulder; round her Body, and artificial Ornament of Feathers of divers Colours; in one Hand a Bow, and a Quiver by her Side; under one Foot a human Head pierc'd with an Arrow, and a Lizard on the Ground. Naked, because the Inhabitants are all so. The Arms are what both Men and Women use there. The Head shews that they are Cannibals. The Lizard, they are so big here, that they devour Men." Copies of the Iconologia are held in every significant research library in the world. Only the University of Chicago and Cambridge University (that I can determine) Own copies of the beautiful 1618 edition. Only Oxford, the British Library, the Morgan Library and the Library of Congress hold earlier illustrated editions. Bookseller Inventory # Fred-Vault1
