Item Description: Ric. Davis, Oxford, 1662. Leather Bound. Book Condition: Fair. [35], 104 [100], [14], 74, 4 p. 14 cm. Full leather is worn with bumped corners, chipped spine ends. Old cataloguing label adhered to front pastedown. Scattered pencil and ink notes throughout. Numerous small tears and a few small stains. Marcus Minucius Felix was one of the earliest of the Latin apologists for Christianity. Of his personal history nothing is known and he is now exclusively known for this Octavius, a dialogue on Christianity between the pagan Caecilius Natalis and the Christian Octavius Januarius. Contains observations by Nicolas Rigault, French classical scholar who was librarian to Louis XIII. The second item in this volume is by Julius Firmicus Maternus, a Christian Latin writer and notable astrologer who lived in the reign of Constantine I and his successors; in this work he scorns the religious beliefs and practices of pagans and implores the Emperor to stamp out the old religions as a sacred duty which will be rewarded by God.
