Item Description: Great Pacific Books 2013 / 2014, 2014. Soft Cover / Pictorial Binding. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Full Color Illustrations (illustrator). New. Paperback : Chapbook soft cover edition in very good condition, A good book to enjoy and keep on hand for yourself. Or would make an ideal gift for the fan / reader in your life. Reading is one of the great pleasures in life. The poem: If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools. If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!" If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son! Size: Poetry / Lyrics / Music. Photographic Essay / Poetry. Bookseller Inventory # 5030125

Item Description: MacMillan & Co. Ltd, London, 1910. Paperback. Book Condition: Near Very Good. Frank Craig (illustrator). With Kipling's famous poem "IF --" on p. 175. First edition, first printing, first state (?). Printed green wraps, 8vo (7-3/16 inches [18.3 cm] tall), pp. xii, 338, four B&W plates, publishers six page catalogue (unpaginated) beginning verso upper cover and ending recto (inside) lower cover. The publisher's catalogue is dated "N. 10. 7. 10." (10 July 1910) at foot of lower cover and still discernible on this copy although partially rubbed due to a corner crease at ".10" . Volume is soiled and edge worn with tiny chips and light creases, p.o. name and date "Cutler Paige / Madras / 2/13/11" to half-title, original bookseller's sticker remnant "Higginbotham and Co. / Bangalore" at bottom corner of front cover, text lightly toned with fox-free plates. This copy appears to be an unrecorded and earlier state of the Colonial Library edition (Richards, 242) than previously seen. And, considering the evidence at hand may also predate the release of both the first UK and US editions. The volume is bound in green wrappers (instead of orange red wrappers), measures an 1/8 of an inch shorter than the Colonial Library edition described in Richards, A242 (p. 202), has a six page catalogue partially printed directly onto the inside of both covers (instead of an eight page insert), and shows an earlier publication date, by one month ("N. 10. 7. 10.") than the recorded ("CL. 10. 8. 10" [10 August 1910]") Colonial Library edition. In the six page publisher's catalogue, "Rewards and Fairies (No. 577) is the highest Kipling number shown and "Men, Women, and Ghosts" (No. 581) by Edith Wharton, is the highest number overall in the catalogue. "Men, Women, and Ghosts" was published in Oct. 1910 with the altered title of "Tales of Men and Ghosts" (Ref. Bruccoli v. 3 p. 344). The title change to Wharton's "Men, Women, and Ghosts" along with the July dated integral catalogue, point to this being an earlier state of the Colonial Library edition then heretofore known and perhaps, a publisher planned pre-Ocober publication date in the colonies for "Reward and Fairies". Ref. Richards, A242. Bookseller Inventory # 2534
