About this Item: Tel Aviv: NO Publisher., 1972. Hardcover. 8vo. 226 pages. In Hebrew. First edition. SUBJECT (S) : Zionists – correspondence – catalogs; Jabotinsky, Vladimir, 1880-1940 – correspondence – catalogs. Jabotinsky (1880-1940) was a Russian Zionist, soldier and writer, and founded the Jewish Legion during WWI. He spoke Russian, Hebrew (he was a strong proponent of the Hebrew renaissance) , Yiddish, German, French and English, making him a very accessible and beloved speaker, especially in Eastern Europe. Though not a follower of Marx, Jabotinsky was a believer in socialism, influenced by his professors in Rome, where he studied law. Back in Russia, the 1903 Kishinev pogrom spurred him into Zionist activity; he was a delegate at the Sixth Zionist Congress (where he voted against Herzl's Uganda Scheme) , and turned his journalistic efforts in that direction as well, editing the Zionist Razsvet, and then later four publications in Constantinople for the World Zionist Organization. When the Ottoman Empire joined WWI, Jabotinsky foresaw that nations downfall, and, desiring to gain Israel from the Ottomans, began assembling the Jewish Legion, and joined the British 38th Battalion himself. About this Item: Paris: Yatsa Le-Or `al Yede Yehiel Bril, 1871. Later cloth, 12mo, 152 pages ; 20 cm. 1st edition thus. In Hebrew. Abulafia’s correspondence with French rabbis on Maimonides' doctrine of resurrection. "Abulafia is best known for his controversy with Maimonides over the doctrine of resurrection. Maimonides' views on this subject seemed heretical to him. Abulafia, in spite of his youth, publicly denounced them, and was the first in Europe to do so during Maimonides' lifetime. His accusations were mainly in the form of letters to the rabbis of southern France, especially the ‘sages of Lunel, ’ who held Maimonides in great esteem and strongly defended his views. The whole correspondence, which also included an exchange of letters with the rabbis of northern France, did not bring the hoped for result and was a great disappointment to Abulafia. Thirty years later, when the controversy was renewed, he was asked by Na? Manides to take part in it again, but remembering his earlier failure, he refused. Much of the correspondence, edited byAbulafia, was published asKit? Bal-Rasa'il (Paris, 1871) . Abulafia's conception of resurrection, far from being an abstract philosophy, is based upon the traditional belief, according to which the words of the rabbis on the subject are taken in their literal sense. Notwithstanding this (and contrary to Graetz's opinion) , Abulafia possessed a wide knowledge of the Hebrew and Arabic philosophy of his time" (EJ, 2008) . SUBJECT(S) Maimonides, Moses, 1135-1204. Resurrection (Judaism) Rabbis -- Correspondance. Abulafia, Meir, 1180 (ca. ) -1244 -- Correspondance. OCLC lists 21 copies worldwide. Light wear Very Good Condition. (RAB-59-1)xx.
