About this Item: No publisher/printer [1825 or 1826], No place, 1825. Written by "One of the first detachment sent by the Real del Monte Company" whom later scholarship has identified as Italian engineer Gaetano Moro. The account picks up after Moro left New York and had, according to this work, described New York and the journey there. Moro tells in fascinating detail of the trip to the Caribbean, landing at Tampico and then proceeding inland to the mines of the Real del Monte Company at Pachuca. His observations are of flora, fauna, geology, and people, most especially these latter two. This account was apparently first printed in the London Magazine in the February, 1826, issue. When this printing occurred we have not been able to establish with certainty. The paper on which it is printed is watermarked 1824 and 1825. The text is clearly from vol. I of "something," but what? Dated on p. 94: Real del Monte, July 16, 1824. Evidence of readership: Extensive and informed marginalia, including in the lower margin of one page an extensive quotation from Moro's original manuscript, which is given in Spanish, not Italian. Some crossing out in pencil as if for editing. 4to. pp. 51?94. Bound in 20th-century half brown leather with orange cloth sides, no lettering on spine. Marginalia cropped in places with loss of a few words, though their content can often be surmised. Seller Inventory # 30279
