Item Description: 1606. In 12, [mm. 130 x 71], pp. 238 – (4). In pergamena coeva con autore al dorso. Al piatto anteriore etichetta applicata che copre parzialmente una annotazione. Piccola mancanza all'angolo superiore di quiella posteriore con annotazioni: di Mavardi (?). Tracce di bindelle. Al frontespizio annotazione di possesso solo parzialmente leggibile. Alcune pagine con piccole fori di tarlo che non ledono il testo e altre con macchie. Strappo al margine interno di p. 23, p. 87 con errore di numerazione. L'operetta è dedicata e il frontespizio presenta una marca tipografica raffigurante un serpente avvolto al tronco di un albero entro una cornice figurata con due puttini alati. L'inizio dei cinque atti è abbellito da vignette xilografiche entro cornici architettoniche. Alessandro Vecchi attivo fra gli ultimi anni del XVI secolo e il primo ventennio del successivo in genere utilizzava una marca con tre rose. Assai strana la dedica dell'opera a Carlo Emanuele di Savoia per le sue nozze con Caterina d'Austria, figlia di Filippo di Spagna le nozze si erano celebrate infatti nel 1585 e, dopo aver dato dieci figli a Carlo Emanuele, era già morta di parto nel 1597. Carlo Emanuele di Savoia, soprannominato il Grande cercò di ingrandire il Ducato occupando militarmente il marchesato di Saluzzo, che era sotto la protezione della Francia, in quel momento scossa dalla guerra civile. Il trattato di pace al termine della guerra sanciva il possesso del marchesato ai Savoia. Sempre nel tentativo di allargare i propri domini si inserì nella successione per il Ducato di Mantova e fu costretto quindi a schierarsi alternativamente on la Spagna e la Francia nel tentativo di salvare i propri domini. Morì di febbre nel 1630 dopo che i Francesi avevano sconfitto il suo esercito. Giovanni Battista Guarini nacque a Ferrara nel 1538 studiò legge a Padova e nel 1567 entrò nella corte di Alfonso d'Este di cui fu poeta di corte insieme al Tasso; alla sua morte passò poi a Firenze e quindi alla corte di Urbino. Morì a Venezia nel 1612. Il Pastor fido venne rappresentato per la prima volta nel 1585, appunto in occasione delle nozze di Carlo Emanuele, ma venne stampata solo nel 1590. L'opera unisce elementi tragici e comici: Diana per un offesa impone che in Arcadia ogni anno gli venga sacrificata una fanciulla finché due giovani di stirpe divina si sposeranno. Il sacerdote Montano, discendente di Ercole decide allora di far sposare il proprio figlio Silvio con Amarilli che discende da Pan. Amarilli ama invece Mirtillo, amato a sua volta dalla ninfa Corsica. L'opera si concluderà con l'unione fra Mirtillo, il pastor fido che si scopre essere anche lui figlio di Montano ed Amarilli mentre Silvio si unisce alla ninfa Dorinda di cui si è nel frattempo innamorato.
