Item Description: Augsburg: Negotium Academiae Caesareo-Francisceae excudit Aug[ustae] Vind[elicorum] [circa ]., 1760. Copper engraving (Very Good, hardly noticeable dusty), 29 x 42 cm (11.4 x 16.5 inches). This rare optical view shows a theatrical scene made by Lodovico Burnacini in Vienna for the Opera Il Pomo d’Oro. Lodovico Burnacini (Mantova, 1636 – Vienna, 1707) was an Italian architect based in Vienna, where he worked as an architect for Leopold I of Habsburg. In 1660-65 he built a part of Hufburg in Vienna and in 1665 the Opera and Theater building, which was later demolished. From 1687 he designed the figures of the Pestsäule (English: Plague Column), a Holy Trinity column located on the Graben, a street in the inner city of Vienna, together with Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Paul Strudel. The Opera and Theater was opened in 1668 with the Opera "II Pomo d'oro", which included over 100 elaborate productions, which are considered as highlights of the early Baroque Theater. The engraver Tobias Lobeck was active in Augsburg in the 18th century, specialised in decorative prints. He also cooperated with Tobias Lotter on his atlases. Bookseller Inventory # 64571

Item Description: Vienna, M. Cosmerovius, 1668., 1668. Folio. (16), 105, (3) pp. With folding engr. title page and 23 folding engr. plates by Matthäus Küsell after Ludovico Burnacini. Marbled half calf (c. 1900) with giltstamped title to gilt spine. This splendid work, published on the occasion of the formal opening of the Court Theatre in 1667, contains the libretto and stage designs of the eponymous opera, produced in honor of the marriage between Emperor Leopold I. and Infanta Margareta Teresia of Spain. The "Pomo d'oro" is considered one of the 17th century's most significant achievements of the musical stage; Burnacini's imaginative stage designs are known only through these illustrations, congenially engraved by Küsell. The two additional plates which Vinet mentions, depicting interior views of the auditorium, are not contained in any of the copies cnsulted for comparison; they were produced only after Küsell had completed the series and were added to a very small number of copies. As they are not mentioned by the printed table of plates (ff. B1r-B2v), the work may be considered complete thus. - Occasional browning and waterstaining; several plates with signs of old remargining and restoration; slight defect to one plate (some loss to image, retouched). Attractive, uncommonly well-preserved copy in comparison with the five copies sold at auction during the past three decades (four of which were incomplete, wanting the engr. title page or one of the 23 stage-designs). From the collection of the Viennese brewer Joseph Wuensch (1843-1916) with his bookplate and library label on the front pastedown. VD 17, 39:126553Z (two copies, collations agreeing with the present copy). Kat. der Ornamentstichslg. Berlin 4127 (as here). Vinet 669 (25 plates). Palau 230.777. Thieme/B. V, 264. AKL XV, 253. Item Description: Vienna: Matteo Cosmerovio, 1667., 1667. 8vo., (6 2/8 x 4 inches). Fine folding etched additional title-page and 23 fine engraved folded etched plates by Matthaus Kusel (1629-81) after Ludovico Burnacini (1636-1707), in their first state (one plate loose, one plate with frayed fore-edge just affecting the image). Original red paper wrappers, original first and last blank leaves mounted as paste-downs, (worn with minor loss in one or two places). Modern red folding box. Provenance: L'Art Ancien (cat. 45, no. 36, sold to Gourary 1956); The Paul and Marianne Gourary Collection of Illustrated Fete Books "Splendid Ceremonies", with their small bookplate on the inside front wrapper. AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE COPY OF THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE AND NOTORIOUSLY FRAGILE FIRST EDITION. This book contains the libretto and stage designs of the infamous Il Pomo d'Oro, an incredible opera produced at the Hapsburg court of the Holy Roman Empire in 1668. The staging of Il Pomo d'Oro was an unprecedented affair with magnificent sets, costumes, and special effects which, if produced today, would be considered a summer blockbuster on the grandest scale. The entire affair is documented in the plates of this book, and one gets a true sense of the pageantry and grandeur of the great monarchies of the day. The opera was so long it had to be staged over the course of two days! Originally planned to mark the wedding of the Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I and Margaret Theresa of Spain in 1666, it was instead put on to celebrate the Empress's 17th birthday two years later. Melchior Küsel's fine plates illustrate each of Burnacini's elaborate sets. This extravagant production of "Il pomo d'oro", or "The Golden Apple", the classical Greek tale which begins with a beauty contest and ends in the Trojan War. This libretto by Sbarra was one of the most sumptuously produced and grandiose operas of the Baroque period, and has Jupiter present the golden apple to the new Empress Margarita as the most beautiful woman present. The event was the first held in the grand new theater in the Cortina of the Hofburg (now the National Library of Austria), designed by the celebrated imperial court engineer Lodovico Burnacini (1636-1707), who also designed the costumes and created a whopping 24 sets complete with elaborate stage machinery, including shipwrecks and collapsing towers. The music was composed by Pietro Antonio Cesti (1629-69), although only an incomplete score survives. Berlin 4126; Vinet 669; Ruggieri 967; not in Biach-Schiffmann, Giovanni und Ludovico Burnacini (Vienna 1931). For inquiries please contact Greg McMurray, MLS, Director, Rare Books.
