Francesco Berni, maggiore esponente della poesia burlesca dei Seicento, un genere scherzoso - satirico che da lui prese l'appellativo di poesia bernesca; nacque a Lamporecchio (Pistoia 1497 - Firenze1535), fu figlio di un notaio ed ebbe la prima educazione a Firenze e successivamente a Roma presso il Cardinale Bibbiena. Costretto a partire da Roma dopo la morte del cardinale (il quale era suo parente) nel 1520 e per aver scritto satire contro il futuro Papa Adriano VI tornÚ a Firenze, al servizio del cardinale Ippolito de' Medici. Frontespizi con vignetta con Apollo sul carro sui segni dello zodiaco, ripetuto anche all’inizio del Simposio. Capilettera ornati e finalini incisi in legno. Al frontespizio del II tomo tracce di una vignetta evidentemente da un altro foglio ancora fresco di stampa appoggiato su questo.In mezza pelle con dorso a 5 scomparti divisi da coppie di linee che affiancano un motivo ondulato al primo tomo e linee con terminazioni vegetali al secondo. Scomparti decorati con motivi vegetali. Tassello con autore e titolo applicato al primo tomo, perso al secondo. Piatti in carta marmorizzata con diversi strappi. Esemplare su carta ossidata, in barbe, a margini bianchi molto ampi che presenta il secondo tomo con lavori di tarlo al centro delle carte per gran parte del testo e che interessano il bordo superiore solo per una trentina di pagine. Piccolissimo lavoro di tarlo al margine superiore bianco delle pagine da 405 a 440 del I tomo. Antiporta e frontespizio del I volume imbraghettati con nastro adesivo da lucido. Mal legate le carte iniziali con la prefazioni che intervalla la vita del Berni. Il secondo tomo, con legatura staccata, presenta i camminamenti di tarlo integrati con carta che tuttavia tende a staccarsi; pressoché slegato, bisognoso di braghettature all’unione dei fogli. Francesco Berni nacque a Lamporecchio presso Pistoia nel 1497, figlio di un notaio, ebbe la prima educazione in Firenze e poi andò a Roma presso il Cardinal Bibbiena di cui era parente. Costretto a partire da Roma dopo la morte del cardinale nel 1520 e per aver scritto satire contro il futuro Papa Adriano VI tornò a Firenze, dove fu al servizio del cardinale Ippolito de’ Medici e morì, forse coinvolto in una congiura nel 1535.Fu il maggiore esponente della poesia burlesca dei Seicento, un genere scherzoso satirico e salace che ebbe una sua fioritura e che da lui prese anche il nome di poesia bernesca continuando anche nei secoli successivi. L’edizione, che venne curata da Paolo Rolli con annotazioni di Anton Maria Salvini, il cui nome compare anagrammato nella forma di Antinoo Nivalsi nella prefazione, inizia con la vita che egli stesso scrisse nel suo Orlando Innamorato, rifatto su quello del Boiardo ed in cui lascia anche una sua descrzione fisica. Di persona era grande magro e schietto / Lunghe e sottil le Gambe forte aveva / E’l Naso grande, e il Viso largo, e stretto / Lo spazio che le Ciglia divideva; Concavo l’Occhio aveva azurro e netto, / La Barba folta quasi’l nascondeva. Segue poi una parte sulle edizioni delle opere del Berni a partire dalla prima del 1538, quella curata dal Lasca del 1548, e che qui è ristampata. Nella prefazione si annuncia anche l’intenzione di stampare un secondo volume che comprende tutte le opere del Berni trovate in altri autori. Oltre a quelli indicati nei titoli, sono riportati sonetti del Coppetta, di Strascino da Siena, Andrea Lori, Luca Martini, Francesco Baldelli, dl Bronzino, Valerio Buongioco, Luca Valoriani, del’Anguillara, Lodovico Domenichi. Il Simposio di Lorenzo de’Medici conclude il volume. Edizione che il Gamba (160) dice di qualche pregio e che, come quella in tre volumi sempre con Londra come finto luogo di stampa, del 1723, ricopia l’edizione fiorentina del Giunta del 1548, come si legge anche in fine del primo volume.
