Item Description: London: Printed for J. Johnson., 1791. FIRST EDITION OF THIS TRANSLATION. 2 volumes. 4to, 293 x 224 mms., pp. xvii [xviii blank, xix - xxvi list of subscribers, xxvii Errata, xxviii blank], 658;[iv], 483 [484 blank], contemporary calf, red leather labels; joints cracked with rear joint of volume 2 tender, other general wear to binding, with various nicks and scratches but a goodish copy, with the bookplate of Alfred A. Johnston on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume. Cowper (1731 - 1800) spent six years preparing this translation, because he had found Pope's translation to be unfaithful to the original. He worked steadily at his task translating 40 lines a day, and by 13 January 1786, he had completed a draft of the Iliad. Interrupted by llness and other distractions, he was unable to continue his work until 1787, and he sent his completed manuscript to Johnson in September, 1790. Johnson paid him £1000 for the translation. Reviews were mixed. John Parsons in The Monthly Review was displeased with Cowper's "passive and unlimited obedience to his author," adding that th "giant strength of Homer" was somtimes subverted by the "feebleness of a pygmy." The Monthly Review, or at least its reviewer, revised that opinion in 1797, when it reviewed Gilbert Wakefield's edition of Pope's Home, stating that Cowper's translation had "superiority over all its predecessors." Cowper. William Cowper (1731-1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him \"the best modern poet\", whilst William Wordsworth particularly admired his poem Yardley-Oak. He was a nephew of the poet Judith Madan. Cowper moved to Weston in 1786. During this period he started his translations of Homer\'s Iliad and Odyssey into blank verse, and his versions (published in 1791) were the most significant English renderings of these epic poems since those of Alexander Pope earlier in the century., Size : Folio (297x225mm), Volume : Two Volumes, William Cowper, P.
