Signed by the translator (Signed by the translator) When Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017—revealing the ancient poem in a contemporary idiom that was “fresh, unpretentious and lean” (Madeline Miller, The Washington Post)—critics lauded it as “a revelation” (Susan Chira, The New York Times) and “a cultural landmark” (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer’s other great epic—the most revered war poem of all time. The Iliad roars with the clamour of arms, the bellowing boasts of victors, the fury and grief of loss and the anguished cries of dying men. It sings, too, of the sublime magnitude of the world—the fierce beauty of nature and the gods’ grand schemes beyond the ken of mortals. In Wilson’s hands, this thrilling, magical and often horrifying tale now gallops at a pace befitting its legendary battle scenes, in crisp but resonant language that evokes the poem’s deep pathos and reveals palpably real, even “complicated,” characters—both human and divine. The culmination of a decade of intense engagement with antiquity’s most surpassingly beautiful and emotionally complex poetry, Wilson’s Iliad now gives us a complete Homer for our generation. Specially bound paperback edition, with deckle-edging (rough-cut) pages and French flaps. .

With the book label of David Levine, Sydney, on upper free endpaper versos. Originally from the library of British politician and diplomat Duff Cooper, whose bookplate, designed by Rex Whistler, is on the upper pastedowns (slightly damp stained in The Odyssey). Presented after his death by his widow, Lady Diana Cooper, to her close friend the writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, inscribed 'Paddy from Duff's library with love from Diana - 1956' in The Iliad, with a similar inscription in The Odyssey. In each volume Patrick Leigh Fermor has pasted a manuscript note, dated 1999, below the gift inscription: 'To be gratefully handed on, and back to John Julius in the fullness of time with love from Paddy and Joan'. Paper-clipped to the upper free endpaper of each volume is Patrick Leigh Fermor's card, annotated by hand: 'Left to be collected by the Viscount Norwich.' The card in The Odyssey is further annotated 'I'm not yet as feeble as this inscription looks!'. John Julius Norwich was the son of Lady Diana Manners and Duff Cooper [later Viscount Norwich]. Loosely inserted in The Iliad is the publisher's printed slip of February 1931, explaining the best way to open the books and cut the pages. The Greek text is in the standard Oxford Classical Texts versions by David B. Munro (Iliad, in 1902) and Thomas W. Allen (Odyssey, in 1908). Pope's celebrated English translation of Homer first appeared in 1715.
