About this Item: Argentorati (Strassburg), Theodosius Rihelius, (1572). 8vo. Contemp. full, richly blindstamped, pigskin over wood. raised bands, coloured titlelabel. Monogram G T R and the year 1613. 893,(37 - Scholia),(36 - Index) pp. Printers woodcut device on title-page. At end, Scholia and Index, with a brownspot in upper magin, otherwise clean. With parallel text in Greek and Latin. The rare and important 1572-edition of Homer's Iliad with the famous commentaries by Obertus Giphanius (Hubert van Giffen) (1534-1604) and the elaborate index. Two different editions were printed in 1572, of which this is smaller one, -"L'autre d'un format plus grands et imprimée avec des caractères plus grands et plus nets." (Graesse, III:328). The text is that of Stephanus (Estienne) (from 1566), and the Latin version that of Crispin (Crispinus) (from 1559), the marginal variants are due to Estienne. Giphanius is famous for his humanistic way of organizing his great literary knowledge, and his commentaries are known to have reached a large public. His commentaries on Homer fit perfectly into the tradition of Renaissance Humanism, as he sees Homer as an essential part of literary and moral learning. The Iliad and the Odyssey were printed simultaneously by Rihelius. Only the Iliad is present here, but is complete in itself. The edition was reprinted numerous times later, but only the two mentioned editions were printed in 1572.Adams: H 764. - Brunet III: 272. Seller Inventory # 49405

About this Item: Theodorus Rihelius, Strasbourg, 1572. In 8° ant. (16,2 x 10). Pp. 893, (73). Manca l'ultima carta bianca. One of the three printing of this edition; and usually Iliad and Odyssey are found separately. Some light marginal stains, neverthless a fine copy in pleasant contemporary half pigsking over boards dated 1599. ADAMS, H-778. EBERT, n.9960. HOFFMANN, II-317. Seller Inventory # 2817
