Embossed Chinese motif to rear cover. Published by Shianghai Press, 1936. Printed in China. Text in English and Chinese throughout. Very scarce volume, extensively illustrated, covering General Principles, The Evolution of Chinese Calligraphy and Its Emminent Exponents, The Evolution of Chinese Painting and Its Famous Painters, The Special Features and Technique of Chinese Painting and The Principal Exhibits (examined in Dynastic order). 257pp featuring 175 Exhibits. The book is in very good condition. Cover shows signs of wear and spine is faded and worn. The binding is firm and text is clean and bright with only minor fading to extremities. Very small booksellers label to inside front pastedown. Overall this volume is in very good condition and better condition than is generally found for volumes in this series. Miscellaneous (191 pages) (Tapestry and Embroidery, Jade, Cloisonné, Red Lacquer, Fans, Furniture and Writing Accessories, Archaeological Exhibits and Ancient Books); all with black and white illustrations.; Signs of wear in the hardcover cloth. Minor edgeworn. Minor scuffs on the front cover of the four volumes and on the back cover of the second and third volumes; The gilt designs on the front cover of the second and forth volume show minor yellowing marks. The interior is in very good condition with minor signs of wear.; Catalogue for the International Exhibition of Chinese Art held by the Royal Academy of Arts at Burlington House, London, from the 28th November 1935 to 7th March 1936. This was the largest exhibition of Chinese Art ever mounted. More than 780 works from the Chinese government collection were shown at the exhibition, along with an additional 3,100 pieces belonging to some 240 collections from other countries. This catalogue shows the government exhibits selected that comprise Bronze, Porcelain, Painting, Calligraphy, Jade, Carvings in Red Lacquer, Cloisonné, etc, some of these works were never seen before by Westerners and are from the Palace Museum, The National Museum, The Academia Sinica, The Henan Provincial Museum and the Anhui Provincial Library. The exhibition was well received and attended, attracting a total of 401,768 visitors and increased the study of Chinese art revolutionizing Chinese art history as an intellectual discipline. About this Item: The Commercial Press, Limited Shanghai, China, 1936. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Four volumes for the 1935-1936 exhibition of Chinese art in London, primarily comprising works from the Palace Museum and the National Museum of China, printed in blue silk over boards with gilt decorations/printing on the from covers and spines and printed in Chinese and English: Volume I, Bronze; Volume II, Porcelain: Volume III, Painting and Calligraphy; and Volume IV, Miscellaneous, which contains tapestry, jade, fans, furniture, etc. Some rubbing and shelf wear to the head and foot of each volume, as well as a neat owner's signature on the front endpaper of each volume, along with what looks like some tape residue. There is some chipping of the dust jackets on all four volumes as well as a few tears along the spine edges. All four dustjackets are protected in mylar covers. The introduction by the Chinese Organizing Committee in Nanking states, "In October, 1934, the Executive Yuan decided that we should send some of national art treasures to the International Exhibition of Chinese Art.Our sole aim in so doing is to make the West appreciate the beauty of Chinese Art." This is a beautiful set, rarely found in this condition complete with the dust jackets. Seller Inventory # 000045
