Internally fair to good,front endpaper detached, title page torn with loss of border at lower right. Lacks two leaves of the index. Last 3 leaves of directory at back are seriously creased. Most of the contents have light soiling and staining but are generally good. Three maps have short tears into the map surface. This issue does not have the three bird's-eye views which were included in a very limited number of copies. 270, 325-348, 365-394 pp, 76 hand-colored maps, hundreds of woodcut illustrations and portraits. This is a very attractive atlas typical of Andreas' work and very similar in appearance to his atlas of Iowa. Among the views is one of the residence of Dr. W. W. In later 1/4 red leather and brown cloth with original gilt front cover title laid down. Elephant folio, irregularly paginated consisting of 221 numbered pages (pages 161-184 were never published) plus 12 additional unnumbered illustration leaves and 7 pages of unnumbered ads. The atlas includes 2 double page general maps (US and World); 14 double page state and territory maps (as listed in the title with the New Mexico map misnumbered 66/67 instead of 62/63); numerous county, township, city and village maps (some double page); numerous lithographic views of businesses and residences and portraits of prominent citizens; and a history of Wisconsin. All maps are hand colored. The last and most cartigraphically desirable of the three Wisconsin state atlases published during the period 1875 to 1881, following the atlases of Walling, Tackabury & Co. (1875) and Snyder, Van Vechten & Co. (1878). ***** Condition: Complete with all maps and illustrations listed on the index sheet. Light wear to covers. Hinges are reinforced with binder's tape; binding is sound. All pages have a light even tone. Occasional edge tears are noted with extensive old tape repairs to the edges of map sheets 91/92, 93/94, 107-110 and 145-148 (all related to Wisconsin counties and towns). Pages are generally clean with light pencil markings present on a small number of pages, a fore edge dampstain present on a couple sheets, and scattered smudges and toning spots typical for atlases of this age.
