With a few wood engravings (some full page) and 24 (22 on two pages) lithographical plates and 2 folded charts. David Kirkaldy (18201897) was a Scottish engineer who pioneered the testing of materials as a service to engineers during the Victorian period. He established a test house in Southwark, London and built a large hydraulic tensile test machine, or tensometer for examining the mechanical properties of components, such as their tensile strength and tensile modulus or stiffness. 'Comprising a Large Selection of Tabulated Results, Shewing the Strength and Other Properties of Materials Used in Construction, with Explanatory Text, and Historical Sketch'. Original cover pasted to replacement boards. Spine is new and gold embossed. This is a desirable book for several reasons. It has "numerous lithograph plates and engravings on wood." It shows the state of the art in the testing of material properties and tabulates material strengths as known at that time. It covers wood, stone and metals and has elegant drawings of typical failures. It shows failure modes of specimens with various hole patterns. As part of an "historical sketch" it discusses in some detail the "Tay Bridge Disaster" (Dec 28, 1879). It consists of 302 pages plus appendices, index and conversion tables; no dust jacket; 4to - over 9 3/4" - 12" Tall; there may be additional shipping charges on international orders.
