Item Description: McFarland Co Inc, United States, 2014. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. William Blake s series of engraved illustrations for Dante s Divine Comedy were his last major project and a summation of his religious and artistic beliefs. Unfinished at his death, the series includes seven engravings and 102 unique works in various stages of completion - some of the most beautiful pictures of his career. These pictures are not simple illustrations. In fact the artist used them to reinterpret and correct Dante s poem. This book compares the two men s theological and artistic views and analyzes in detail the meaning of these works, for the first time introducing their theological and aesthetic exuberance to a modern audience. Item Description: 1968. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good+. New York: Da Capo Press, 1968 [1922]. Small Folio, original dark grey burlap portfolio lettered in black, housing 120 loose plates comprising 109 illustrations in monochrome. First thus edition of Blake's series of illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy. This series of illustrations was Blake's largest undertaking, completed alongside his illustrations for the Book of Job, and was the last of his legacy, commissioned by the painter John Linnell. The majority of the plates were completed just before Blake's death in 1827, though many remained in unfinished form. The originals were subsequently purchased from Linnell's estate by the National Art Collections fund in 1918, which issued facsimiles of the originals to subscribers in 1922 in an edition of 250. The plates here are facsimiles of the drawings from the 1922 edition, printed by the Meriden Gravure Company, reproduced in the same size as the originals. Included in this edition are the seven original engravings which Blake completed that were not included in the 1922 edition. This edition represents only the second edition of one of Blake's masterworks, limited here to 1100 copies, 1000 of which were for sale to the public, and 100 of which were for private distribution. This copy has been marked 'Not For Sale'. Light flaking to black lettering on front board and spine of portfolio, some fading to card overlays but binding solid and clean. Lower right hand corner of entire plate block very gently bumped, crimping to the outermost top corner of many plates, but overall plates are sharp and bright. A nice example overall of a work which is unusually scarce given the fairly sizable print run. Bookseller Inventory # 000600
