Item Description: K. Ogawa, Tokyo, 1896. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. 1st Edition, Meiji 29 (1896), 8vo (7 1/2 x 10 1/4 in - 19.3 x 25.9 cm), crepe paper, 12 hand colored collotypes, tied with twisted silk cords, spine covered, 7 folded leaves with stiffener paper in between, the front and back cover are not folded pages, 14 pages in total (covers not counted). This is one in a series of collotype books with this same title published by K. Ogawa. In the four part series of books with this title, this is the only book where the illustrations are in a vertical format (height exceeds width). This format is best for presenting posed full body/standing portraits of individual people and that is the nature of almost all the images in the book. The other three books are in the horizontal format and contain images which are more in the nature of groups of people, views and scenes. The first internal folded page has the Title Page (front) and Preface (back). The six other folded pages have a photographic image, reproduced in collotype, front and back. The focus of this book is customs and ceremonies of Japan with the focus on activities of women. The photographs include, 1) The "Geisha" (Singing Girl). [in later editions captioned "The 'Suwari-Odori.' (A Dancing)], 2) Backyard of a Tea House, 3)"Sayonara!" (Good-Bye), 4) Venturing Out in the Rain, 5) Letter Writing, 6) Morning Toilet, 7) The Cherry, 8) The "Amma" (Shampooer)*, 9) The "Shiohi" (Fishing on the Dry Bed)*, 10) Buddhist Priests Conspicuous, 11) The "Kamishimo" (The Ancient Ceremonial Dress)* and 12) Japanese Maiden*. The plates designated with an "*" contain different images from those found in later editions of this book. While the image areas vary slightly, the norm is 7 x 5 1/2 in. The collotypes are all printed against a light yellow background. This is not the case with later editions and even some versions of the first editions. On later editions the front and back covers were also folded pages which is not the case with this first edition. ~ Condition. The book is in Good condition. The front cover has large pieces missing along the edges. The worst area is a 1 inch piece missing at the upper left corner. There is a 1/2 in piece missing along the top right edge. The bottom edge has smaller pieces missing at the right corner tip and the left corner. There is a 1 1/2 inch tear along the edge of the cover page. None of the other pages have tears at the edge. Most plates have foxing ranging from light to moderate. The majority of the foxing is in the margins. Overall the plates are very nice and the foxing condition is not a significant distraction. The spine covering is present but broken and frayed at the top and bottom. Bookseller Inventory # 1896081101

Item Description: K. Ogawa, Tokyo, 1896. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. 1st Edition, Meiji 29 (1896), 8vo (7 1/2 x 10 1/4 in - 19.3 x 25.9 cm), crepe paper, 12 hand colored collotypes, tied with purple twisted silk cords, 7 folded leaves with stiffener paper in between, the front and back cover are not folded pages, 14 pages in total (covers not counted). The book is in Good+ condition. The covers have edge damage and there is some separation between the front and back of the covers. The spine edge is not covered and there is no evidence that it ever was. There is light foxing at the front and back but not on the 6 folded pages with hand colored collotype images. Internally, the plates are in Very Good+ (near Fine) condition. No tears or cuts on the outside edges of the folded pages. ~~ More information, to include digital pics, available on request. Bookseller Inventory # 1896070309b

Item Description: Kelly & Walsh, Tokyo, 1896. Book Condition: Good. Collotype plates by K. Ogawa and by descriptions by S. Takashima, 8vo (7 1/8 x 10 in - 18 x 25.7 cm), 32 plates (Vol I) + 68 plates (Vol II), black and white collotypes on crepe paper, bound Japanese style and silk thread ties. Each plate has a title and generally a paragraph of descriptive information written by S. Takashima. While the image areas vary slightly, the norm is 6~7 x 4 1/2~5 in. This is one in a series of photographic album type books under this same title published by K. Ogawa. The four books with the same title, each containing 12 color collotype plates, are seen much more frequently than this set. The two books in this set have a volume number printed on the cover. This is not the case with the four 12 plate books. ~ Condition . I would rate the books as in Good condition. The covers of both books are in Poor condition. The covers of Vol I are complete but worn and stained. The crepe paper is rolling over at the edges and there are numerous tears and creases, primarily along the edges. The covers on Vol II are in Fair (bad) condition. The front cover is complete but has considerable staining, creasing and tears. Additionally, the crepe paper is rolling over at the edges. The back cover is in tatters with pieces missing. The preliminary blank pages of Vol II have water staining. Internally the books are in Good+ condition. The collotype plates are clean and free of problems in the image area. These two books are a good candidate for rebinding. ~~ More information, including a listing of all plates, available on request. Bookseller Inventory # 1896050623
