Bound in are 13 blank leaves covered with copious notes in a contemporary hand (6 preceding the title, 7 at end). Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards; metal clasps and catches intact. A collection of 301 extracts from 26 classical and post-classical Latin poets arranged by subject by the Augustinian friar Octavian Mirandula. Added is a literary essay by Mancinelli (1452-1506), one of the most widely read humanist teachers and poets and the undisputed authority on correct Latin phraseology and style. An interesting copy with 26 pages of contemporary manuscript excerpts from the writings of Johann Lorich on blank leaves at beginning and at end; with several contemporary ownership entries inside front cover. Al verso dell’ultima carta, marca tipografica con figura alata con veste svolazzante che regge nelle mani una squadra e un morso (?), in piedi su un basamento in prospettiva dove sono le iniziali del tipografo. Tagli marmorizzati. Capilettera delle due opere decorate.Alla carta 1 nota di possesso: Joannis .Annotazioni in grafia antica e sottolineature nel testo a riprova delle letture che l’antico possessore ne fece.Da carta 385v. inizia l’opera di Antonio MancinelloUn foro di chiodo(?) attraversa il margine delle prime carte.La c. 42 ha è stata restaurata in antico dopo uno strappo che ha allentato la cucitura, per il rseto buon esemplare a margini larghi con qualche piccola macchia.Errori di numerazione alle carte c. 255, 260, 276, 296, 303, 331, 389.Ottaviano Mirandola (Octavianus De Floravantus Mirandulanus) deve probabilmene il nome alla sua città di origine, mentre quello della famiglia era Fioravanti. Visse fra il sec. XV ed il XVI e divenne arcivescovo di Milano; nella lettera di dedica si indica come Canonico regolare lateranense.L’opera, dopo la lettera di Filippo Beroaldi al lettore, e la dedica del Mirandola al Protonotario Apostolico Ottaviano Arcimboldo ha, in questa edizione di Strasburgo, l’elenco dei poeti e l’indice delle materie cui si riferiscono le citazioni di motti e sentenze. Chevillot for H. de Marnef & the widow of G. Cavellat, 1585. A later edition (1st ed.: Venice: 1507), of Mirandula's popular "Pleasure Garden of Famous Poets," unquestionably one of the most popular reference books of the Renaissance, reprinted countless times throughout the 16th century, in Venice, Paris, Lyon, Basel, Antwerp, and Strasbourg. The "Pleasure Garden" consists of familiar quotations from the 21 major classical Latin poets. This copy comes from the library of Michael Wodhull (1740-1816), Dibdin's "Orlando," a notable classical scholar, and the first English translator of the complete works of Euripdes. This copy has been bound in full red straight-grained morocco by Roger Payne with Wodhull's arms and contains Wodhull's note "Perfect" on the free front-endpaper and on the rear free endpaper "Mar: 22d 1787." Later bookplate and ownership inscription (dated 31.10.1919) of the binding collector Thore Virgin and the book ticket of Rolf Wistrand. Fine copy. Two corrections by Wodhull in the text. Cette sorte d'ouvrage était utile aux élèves et aux écrivains pour émailler leurs ouvrages de citations adéquates, ainsi qu'aux poètes néo-latins de la Renaissance. Ce recueil est le seul ouvrage d'Ottavio Fioravanti, chanoine régulier de St. Augustin. Le livre est agrémenté d'une courte préface de Philippe Béroalde. Première édition donnée par les de Tournes de ce célèbre florilège de poètes latins. Elle fut réimprimée plusieurs fois. Bel exemplaire dans une élégante reliure lyonnaise à la cire.
