Item Description: New York Graphic Society Ltd., Boston, Mass, 1974. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated first printing. Signed by Ansel Adams in black pen on the half title page, and dated "SF 12/18/74". Signature is NOT on a glued in card, written on the page itself. Dust jacket is clean, bright, and unclipped. Slight rubbing to the edges of the jacket, and slightly more moderate rubbing to it's top corners. Very slight bit of sunning to the spine. Quarter black buckram over green cloth boards with the titling in silver on initials AA in silver on the front board. Boards are clean and unbumped. Front hinge ever so slightly shaken. Spine glue noticeably cracked between pages 112 and 113, where the crash cloth is visible between the pages. The crash cloth is still holding strong (no loose pages) however. Slipcase is present but showing some wear. Two 3" tears along the outside edges, one at the bottom and one at the top of the slipcase. Several smaller bumps and scruffs to the slipcase as well. Overall a very nice copy, the interior pages and photographs are pristine and bright, and we are grading the book Good in a Very Good dust jacket. Were it not for the crack to the binding glue the book would be Very Good as well. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # M0692

Item Description: New York Graphic Society, Boston, Massachusetts, 1974. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Adams, Ansel (illustrator). 1st Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. 130 p. Signed by Author(s) Housed in a near fine slipcase (condition details below), with Ansel Adams' signature on a page tipped in prior to title page and dated "Carmel, 1975". ***ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ansel Easton Adams (1902-1984) was noted as a perfect balance of photographer and environmentalist. Most of us have seen Ansel Adams' photographs and have been awed by their beauty; he helped to elevate photography to an art comparable with painting and music, and equally capable of expressing emotion and beauty. He told his students, "It is easy to take a photograph, but it is harder to make a masterpiece in photography than in any other art medium". (Info from Wikipedia) ***ABOUT THE BOOK: The twelve-page Introduction by Wallace Stegner foretells the purpose of this book; to share with us Ansel Adams' vision of Nature ("Nature is for reverence") in all its grandeur and glory. In the preface, Ansel Adams himself discusses the difficulty of choosing 115 images from a working span of over 50 years and his hope that we, the viewers, would find new worlds open to us through his eyes. ***DESCRIPTION: Grey cloth boards with the initials "AA" in silver gilt, black cloth spine with silver gilt lettering, pictorial endpapers ("Clearing Storm", Sonoma County Hills, California c. 1960), frontispiece ("Winter Sunrise", Sierra Nevada, 1944) followed by the tipped-in page bearing Ansel Adams' signature and stating it is a special edition for Time-Life subscribers, Carmel, California, dated 1975, followed by title page, Ansel Adams' preface, Wallace Stegner's Foreword, followed by over 100 pages of his incomNear Fineparable photographs; most from Nature, but some fascinating portraits and scenes that include cities, buildings, and ruins. Oblong folio, pagination: (1-2), tipped in signature page, (3-5), 6-127, Colophon page. The unclipped pictorial dust jacket has a photograph of the Sierra Nevada in winter on the front and Mount Williamson on the back, the front flap contains a summary of the book, the back flap short bios and pictures of both Ansel Adams and Wallace Stegner. The heavy cardboard slipcase is covered in brown paper with the same "AA" initials on the front in black. ***CONDITION: Volume is fine with no evidence of usage; the text block is strong, the head and tail of the spine, and the corners, are perfectly straight with no rubbing, interior is clean and bright, totally free of prior owner markings. The unclipped dust jacket shows the original price of $65.00 "until 12/31/74" and $75.00 thereafter, it is near fine with only some shallow creases to the head of the spine. The slipcase is also near fine with a few shallow tears just beginning at scattered portions of the joints, a small tear to the case where the back meets the top, and some minor scuffing to the back. ***POSTAGE: Please note that this is an extremely large and quite heavy book; while we are happy to ship to both domestic and international addresses, additional postage will apply. If you would like to contact us in advance for postage costs, we are happy to provide an estimate prior to your placing an order. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Item Description: 1981. "ADAMS, Ansel. Signed poster for Images 1923-1974. Boston: New York Graphic Society, 1981. Large photographic poster (24 by 36 inches), mounted on foam core. $5000.Striking original poster advertising the republication of Adams’ Images 1923-1974, signed by him at the bottom.Near the end of his life, Ansel Adams "decided to produce a series of posters replicating as closely as possible the quality of his originals. Ansel chose three images to begin with—Moonrise, Clearing Winter Storm, and Aspens (vertical)—and made extra-large prints of each so that they could be directly laser-scanned with no enlargement. Each poster was designed to highlight a recent book. Ansel's favorite printer, David Gardner of Gardner Lithograph, made superb duotone reproductions on heavy coated stock, and the combination of laser-scanning and exquisite printing resulted in an image with a huge range of clearly defined tones Ansel supervised the first press runs" (Alinder, 337). This scarce exhibibition-size signed poster, with its striking image of Moonrise, is within that select first group, and highlights his photobook, Images 1923-1974 (1974). Often viewed as "the greatest photograph ever made," Moonrise was photographed by Adams in 1941 on a road near Hernandez. He released the shutter as "the sun sank below the clouds behind him The creation of Moonrise was serendipitous: while a painter or sculptor can work from stored memories and imagination, something must happen in the real world in order for a photographer to make a photograph" (Alinder, 185-191). "The stunning contrast between light and dark, as if we stand in this photograph at the very cusp of day’s transition into night, captures the emotional feeling that Adams first visualized when he saw the scene It represents the essence, he felt, of a changing world" (Sayre, World of Art, 265). "Ansel knew that it was among the very best photographs he had ever made" (Alinder, 193). Light faint foxing to top margin. An impressive signed image.". Signed. Bookseller Inventory # 69124
