About this Item: 4to (195 x 145 mm). Mit halbseitiger Holzschnittmarke des Jesuitenordens auf Titel. [8] Bl. Coumont, Demonology and Witchcraft. An annotated Bibliography (2005), Nr. T27.15; De Backer-Sommervogel VIII, S. 16, Nr. 21; VD 17 23:324457V; Golden, Encyclopedia of Witchcraft. The Western Tradition IV (2006), 1122; O'Neill/Dominguez, Diccionario historico de la Compania de Jesus IV, 3794. First edition. The book of the Jesuit Petrus Thyraeus (or Peter Dorkens) on apparitions and visions of all kinds, as they are featured in the Old and New Testament, found great interest among the educated contemporaries so that a second edition was printed five years later. His treatise on spirits and ghosts was directly relevant to some of the foremost intellectual speculation of his period. Thyraeus had entered the Jesuit Order in 1561 and became a well-respected preacher and teacher. He enjoyed high esteem by Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, a leading figure of the Counter Reformation and founder of the University of Wurzburg where he lived since 1573 as prince-bishop. - Browned throughout, ms. notes in upper margin of title leaf. - Marbled calf of ca. 1800, edges in red (small hole in spine). About this Item: Florence Torrentinus, 1551. Folio, pp. 340, [3] index and errata; additional MS index added on 2pp. at end by an early hand; with fine large woodcut Medici device on title, and many woodcut initials; apart from one or two minor stains a very good, large and clean copy in seventeenth- or eighteenth-century calf, spine attractively gilt, upper joint just cracking. English ownership inscription on title of R. Rudyerd, 1723. First edition. Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) was bishop of Nocera, an intimate of the Medicis (especially Duke Cosimo I, to whom the book is dedicated), and one of the most eminent historians and biographers of his age. Spending much of his professional life in Rome, he was disappointed in his ambition of a cardinal's hat when Clement VII (Giulio de' Medici) was succeeded by Paul III, an enemy of Giovio's patrons. Retiring to his villa on the shores of Lake Como, he spent his wealth and time in adorning his retreat with portraits of famous soldiers and authors - a remarkable collection which was famous in its own time and now regrettably dispersed. With the spread of the collector's fame, Giovio's ideas inspired similar collections: Cosimo de' Medici started his in 1550; the Archduke Ferdinand modelled a collection of miniature portraits on Giovio's arrangement, and Duke Philip of Pomerania began his collection after visiting Como in 1596. Nearer to home, Cardinal Federigo Borromeo built up a similar collection in Milan. This book commemorates Giovio's collection with descriptions of the portraits and biographies of each subject. Among the portraits was one - the only known authentic likeness - of Christopher Columbus, and perhaps the most valuable feature of this book is Giovio's biography of the man who discovered the New World, on pp. 171-4. With an early manuscript index on the final free endpaper, perhaps in the hand of the R. Rudyerd who has inscribed the title page. Emblemata Horatiana, imaginibus in aes incisis atque: Vaenius, Otto.

About this Item: Amsterdam, Heinrich Wetstein, 1684., 1684. "Otto van Veen was one of the foremost printers und best engravers of his time, Rubens having been his pupil. In the field of book illustrations he became famous as the creator of the very important and widely imitated book of emblems ." – VD17 23:673064A; Landwehr, German, 607; Landwehr, Roman, 741; Landwehr, Emblem and Fables, 824; Praz 523; Faber du Faur 818.
